Excerpt from Gems From the Victorian Anthology The publishers have asked me to put together, under the title of Gems from the Victorian Anthology, some poems and extracts from poems which appeared in a collection they printed for me in 1902. In compiling a work of nearly six hundred octavo pages, a good many considerations had to be at tended to, over and above the personal likings of the compiler, such as the opinion of those he considered to be good judges, the desirability of representing various poetical schools, and so forth. In this little book I have attended to none of these considerations, but have selected simply poems and parts of poems which I particularly liked, in the belief that they will give pleasure to persons of similar tastes, bad or good.
