Who wants to change school science education and why? What mechanisms exist to effect change? What implications do they have for teachers' professionalism? These are the principal questions explored in this book. The authors focus on strategies for effecting change, including decentralized and statutory mechanisms, and the use of systems of assessment. The authors question the effectiveness of centralized programmes in improving the quality of students' science education. They suggest that this arises from a failure to acknowledge the contribution that the science teaching profession must make to reform. They argue that sustained and effective change, embodying improvements in standards, depends upon promoting the initiativ

People cope with threats to their identities in many different ways. Until the original publication of this title in 1986, there had been no theoretical framework within which to analyse their strategies for doing this, or to examine the nature and impact of the threatening experiences themselves. In this elegant and original book, Glynis Breakwell proposes an integrative model which explores the structure of identity and the principles directing its development. Focusing on examples of threat such as unemployment, sexually atypical employment and ethnic marginality, Breakwell examines the relation of the individual to social change. Through her sensitive use of case studies, she enables the victims of threat to speak for themselves about their experiences and feelings. Their reactions illustrate her proposed framework of three levels of coping strategies – intra-psychic, interpersonal and intergroup – and her assessment of the factors which limit the success of such strategies. The case studies also point to new evidence on the effects of unemployment and the impact of youth training schemes at the time. This title would have been essential reading for a range of undergraduate courses in social and abnormal psychology and individual differences, as well as for postgraduate training in clinical and medical psychology at the time. Social workers, counsellors and all those concerned with the care of the sufferers of threatened identities will still find it both informative and influential.

Reissuing works originally published between 1971 and 1994, this collection includes books which offer a broad spectrum of views on curriculum, both within individual schools and the wider issues around curriculum development, reform and implementation. Some cover the debate surrounding the establishment of the national curriculum in the UK while others are a more international in scope. Many of these books go beyond theory to discuss practical issues of real curriculum changes at primary or secondary level. The Set includes books on cross-curricular topics such as citizenship and environment, and also guidance, careers, life skills and pastoral care in schools. A fantastic collection of education history with much still relevant today.

The Comprehensive School: Guidelines for the Reorganization of Secondary Education focuses on the main issues basic to the reform of secondary education as part of the move toward comprehensivization in schools. These issues concern the less able and the culturally disadvantaged children; the streaming/non-streaming controversy; guidance and counseling; and the curriculum. This book has 10 chapters; the first of which provides an overview of the comprehensive movement in education and the concept of the common school, as well as the effects of reorganization on academic standards. The discussion then turns to the controversy concerning streaming and non-streaming in the comprehensive school; how to educate at the secondary level children who are less able and/or are culturally deprived; and the importance of vocational guidance and counseling. The chapters that follow explore issues associated with the curriculum and general school policy in the light of the school's aims and its function in society; the problem of size of school; and the nature and scope of secondary school curriculum. This book concludes by assessing the relative advantages and disadvantages of different types of reorganized school. Educators and policymakers with an interest in comprehensive education will find this book extremely helpful.
