Within the last 15 years, a new form of ministry in the Church of England has established itself - locally trained priests ministering in their own parishes. From an early experiment in London's East End where working class men were trained to minister in their communities and at their places of work, there are now 18 recognised OLM training schemes in England and as the numbers of stipendiary clergy fall, this order is set to grow. This was one of the first books to focus exclusively on the origins and nature of ordained local ministry, and the formation and role of OLMs. It will prove invaluable to those in training, those already working in parishes and their colleagues, all who may be considering this calling and all involved in ministry training.

Biomimetic Sensor Technology

Author: Kiyoshi Toko
Publisher: Cambridge University Press
Total Pages: 223
Release: 2000-06-01
Genre: Technology & Engineering
ISBN: 1139425544

This book deals with biomimetic sensors that can quantify taste and smell - the electronic tongue and nose. Of all sensor technologies, these have been widely considered as the most difficult to realise and the development of these sensors significantly contributes to the understanding of the reception mechanisms in gustatory and olfactory systems. The author begins by dealing with the basic principles of measurement and multivariate analysis. Reception mechanisms in biological systems are briefly reviewed. Several types of biosensor, including enzyme-immobilized membranes, SPR, the quartz resonance oscillator and IC technologies are explained in detail. This book is the first to focus on artificial taste and smell sensors and also reviews conventional biosensors, such as enzyme sensors, in detail.

ISBN: 9780750325974

This book is the first authoritative text on the role that physicists play in solving the inherently multidisciplinary science and technology challenges in food manufacturing. Topics range from designing safe, nutritious and great-tasting foods to the process technology and manufacturing know-how needed to deliver compelling product innovation. The book provides a foundational resource for the transformation of engineering and materials characterisation in the food and pharmaceuticals industries. It is an essential reference for interdisciplinary physical scientists, food/nutrition scientists and engineers working in academic research, government labs and industry, and it is also a valuable resource for R&D staff and product engineers working for suppliers of specialist instrumentation and equipment to the food processing industry. The book is augmented by complementary presentations from the Fourth IOP Physics in Food Manufacturing Conference 2020, held in Leeds, UK. Key Features The first authoritative account of the diverse role that physics and physicists play in the food processing industry. A go-to reference source for anyone wishing to become involved in food processing - science, technology, engineering. Expert accounts by leading academics and industrial scientists.

Release: 1999-09-23
Genre: Science
ISBN: 0199929920

"Bucky Fuller thought big," Wired magazine recently noted, "Arthur C. Clarke thinks big, but Cliff Pickover outdoes them both." In his newest book, Cliff Pickover outdoes even himself, probing a mystery that has baffled mystics, philosophers, and scientists throughout history--What is the nature of time? In Time: A Traveler's Guide, Pickover takes readers to the forefront of science as he illuminates the most mysterious phenomenon in the universe--time itself. Is time travel possible? Is time real? Does it flow in one direction only? Does it have a beginning and an end? What is eternity? Pickover's book offers a stimulating blend of Chopin, philosophy, Einstein, and modern physics, spiced with diverting side-trips to such topics as the history of clocks, the nature of free will, and the reason gold glitters. Numerous diagrams ensure readers will have no trouble following along. By the time we finish this book, we understand a wide variety of scientific concepts pertaining to time. And most important, we will understand that time travel is, indeed, possible.

Quantum Mechanics

Release: 2004-03-31
Genre: Science
ISBN: 9781402021299

An understanding of quantum mechanics is vital to all students of physics, chemistry and electrical engineering, but requires a lot of mathematical concepts, the details of which are given with great clarity in this book. Various concepts have been derived from first principles, so it can also be used for self-study. The chapters on the JWKB approximation, time-independent perturbation theory and effects of magnetic field stand out for their clarity and easy-to-understand mathematics. Two complete chapters on the linear harmonic oscillator provide a very detailed discussion of one of the most fundamental problems in quantum mechanics. Operator algebra is used to show the ease with which one can calculate the harmonic oscillator wave functions and study the evolution of the coherent state. Similarly, three chapters on angular momentum give a detailed account of this important problem. Perhaps the most attractive feature of the book is the excellent balance between theory and applications and the large number of applications in such diverse areas as astrophysics, nuclear physics, atomic and molecular spectroscopy, solid-state physics, and quantum well structures.

John von Neumann (1903-1957) was undoubtedly one of the scientific geniuses of the 20th century. The main fields to which he contributed include various disciplines of pure and applied mathematics, mathematical and theoretical physics, logic, theoretical computer science, and computer architecture. Von Neumann was also actively involved in politics and science management and he had a major impact on US government decisions during, and especially after, the Second World War. There exist several popular books on his personality and various collections focusing on his achievements in mathematics, computer science, and economy. Strangely enough, to date no detailed appraisal of his seminal contributions to the mathematical foundations of quantum physics has appeared. Von Neumann's theory of measurement and his critique of hidden variables became the touchstone of most debates in the foundations of quantum mechanics. Today, his name also figures most prominently in the mathematically rigorous branches of contemporary quantum mechanics of large systems and quantum field theory. And finally - as one of his last lectures, published in this volume for the first time, shows - he considered the relation of quantum logic and quantum mechanical probability as his most important problem for the second half of the twentieth century. The present volume embraces both historical and systematic analyses of his methodology of mathematical physics, and of the various aspects of his work in the foundations of quantum physics, such as theory of measurement, quantum logic, and quantum mechanical entropy. The volume is rounded off by previously unpublished letters and lectures documenting von Neumann's thinking about quantum theory after his 1932 Mathematical Foundations of Quantum Mechanics. The general part of the Yearbook contains papers emerging from the Institute's annual lecture series and reviews of important publications of philosophy of science and its history.

Theory of K-Loops

Theory of K-Loops
Author: Hubert Kiechle
Publisher: Springer
Total Pages: 200
Release: 2004-10-12
Genre: Mathematics
ISBN: 3540458174

The book contains the first systematic exposition of the current known theory of K-loops, as well as some new material. In particular, big classes of examples are constructed. The theory for sharply 2-transitive groups is generalized to the theory of Frobenius groups with many involutions. A detailed discussion of the relativistic velocity addition based on the author's construction of K-loops from classical groups is also included. The first chapters of the book can be used as a text, the later chapters are research notes, and only partially suitable for the classroom. The style is concise, but complete proofs are given. The prerequisites are a basic knowledge of algebra such as groups, fields, and vector spaces with forms.
