**Includes fascinating stories about Billy Fullerton, leader of the Billy Boys, featured in the latest series of BBC's Peaky Blinders** 'A new type of criminal is in our midst - a dangerous, ruthless, well-armed man, who will stick at nothing, not even murder. He is introducing into this country the gangster methods of Chicago and New York... Trade depression has thrown into unemployment thousands of unskilled youths who have nothing to do but lounge about the street corners of our slums in gangs.' John Bull weekly newspaper, 1932. During the 1920s and 1930s, Glasgow gained an unenviable and enduring notoriety as Britain's gang city - the 'Scottish Chicago'. Now Andrew Davies, author of the acclaimed The Gangs of Manchester, brings to life the reign of terror exerted on Glasgow by gangs like the Billy Boys, the Kent Star, the Savoy Arcadians and the South Side Stickers. Out of the most dilapidated and overcrowded tenements in Britain, stepped young men and women dressed like Hollywood gangsters and their molls. On the city's streets, they took centre stage in dramas of their own making, fighting territorial battles laced with religious sectarianism and running protection rackets modelled on those of the American underworld. Drawing on fifteen years of original research, Andrew Davies provides compelling portraits of legendary figures such as 'Razor King' John Ross and Billy Fullerton, leader of the Billy Boys - described as the 'Al Capone' of the city's East End. He sheds new light on the way the city's police and judiciary dealt with the gangs and reveals the fascinating role played by the media in creating myths of the underworld. During what the Daily Express described as 'The War on the Gang', Glasgow's police were led by Chief Constable Percy Sillitoe (who later became head of M15), determined to maintain the image as a tough, gang-busting cop he had forged in Sheffield during the 1920s. This dramatic story, played out against the backdrop of the most volatile of Britain's cities, provides a new window onto the most turbulent period in modern British history and a timely reminder of how deprivation, unemployment and religious bigotry are a toxic cocktail in any era.

In this World Fantasy Award-winning novel of magic and kungfu, four siblings battle rival clans for honor and power in an Asia-inspired fantasy metropolis. *Named one of TIME's Top 100 Fantasy Books Of All Time * World Fantasy Award for Best Novel, winner Jade is the lifeblood of the island of Kekon. It has been mined, traded, stolen, and killed for -- and for centuries, honorable Green Bone warriors like the Kaul family have used it to enhance their magical abilities and defend the island from foreign invasion. Now, the war is over and a new generation of Kauls vies for control of Kekon's bustling capital city. They care about nothing but protecting their own, cornering the jade market, and defending the districts under their protection. Ancient tradition has little place in this rapidly changing nation. When a powerful new drug emerges that lets anyone -- even foreigners -- wield jade, the simmering tension between the Kauls and the rival Ayt family erupts into open violence. The outcome of this clan war will determine the fate of all Green Bones -- and of Kekon itself. Praise for Jade City: "An epic drama reminiscent of the best classic Hong Kong gangster films but set in a fantasy metropolis so gritty and well-imagined that you'll forget you're reading a book." --Ken Liu, Hugo, Nebula, and World Fantasy Award-winning author "A beautifully realized setting, a great cast of characters, and dramatic action scenes. The Cinematic City offers an innovative and thought-provoking insight into cityscape and screenscape and their inter-connection. Illustrated throughout with movie stills, a diverse selection of films (from 'Bladerunner' to 'Little Caesar'), genres, cities and historical periods are examined by leading names in the field. The key dimensions of film and urban theory are introduced before detailed analysis of the various cinematic forms which relate most significantly to the city. From early cinema and documentary film, to film noir, 'New Wave' and 'postmodern cinema', the contributors provide a wealth of empirical material and illustration whilst drawing on the theoretical insights of contemporary feminism, Benjamin, Baudrillard, Foucault, Lacan, and others. The Cinematic City shows how the city has been undeniably shaped by the cinematic form, and how cinema owes much of its nature to the historical development of urban space. Engaging with current theoretical debates, this is a book that is set to change the way in which we think about both the nature of the city and film. An award-winning Scandinavian novel of one woman’s struggle to pull herself and her daughter from the grasp of a criminal past. “A literary tour de force” (Mystery Scene). A celebrated bestseller in Sweden, and the winner of the prestigious Per Olov Enquist Literary Prize, The White City is an arresting story of betrayal and empowerment as a criminal’s girlfriend is left behind to pick up the pieces of her imploded existence. Karin knew what she was getting herself into when she fell for John, a high-flying wheeler-dealer. But she never imagined things would turn out like this: John is gone and the coke-filled parties, seemingly endless flow of money, and high social status have been replaced by cut telephone lines, cut heat, and cut cash. All that remains of Karin’s former life is the mansion he bought for her—and his daughter, the child Karin once swore she would never bring into their dangerous world. Now she is on her own with baby Dream. As the authorities zero in on organized crime, John’s shady legacy is catching up with her. Over the course of a few days, Karin is forced to take drastic measures to claim what she considers rightfully hers . . . “The ghostly Scandinavian setting and [protagonist] Karin’s closely narrated sense of impending doom . . . make Swedish star Ramqvist’s English-language debut an atmospheric and suspenseful read.” —Booklist

This story extends from the uniqueness of Black Chicago, Illinois, USA, in comparison to any other city in America. This prolific difference includes Black Chicago teenager's unique Gouster style of clothing announced by singer David Bowie during the 1960s. More especially, it includes the historical ability for Black teenager's exhibition in phenomenal organizational skills that included hundreds of thousands. Most importantly, this story describes the uniqueness of Chicago, Illinois, as the most segregated city in the United States. In 1885, a state law against discrimination in public places was initiated but was rarely enforced. While not yet confined to the city's nascent ghettos, Blacks generally found housing available only within emerging enclaves. Much of Martin Luther King Jr.'s integration efforts focused on the Deep South, but in 1966, King focused his energies on Chicago, known then as one of the most segregated cities in the country. This unique period of teenage Chicago history is generally unknown to the world and may become extinct in the upcoming years as its participants are now in their early seventies. Inspired by true events, this is where our story begins. In 1965, this story follows a fifteen-year-old Charles Powers, called CP, who aspired to become a Hollywood actor/singer. After the murder of his best friend by the huge Disciple street gang, CP was unexpectedly led into the hierarchy of a near three hundred-member street gang called the Satan Lovers. In 1969, this street organization joined the highly publicized Black P. Stone Nation in its war with the Disciple Nation. In 1970, at age twenty, CP became leader of the now nearly two-thousand-member Black P. Stone Nation faction. In 1964, as housing slowly opened for Black families moving westward, Disciple members and affiliates added themselves to the neighborhood of West Englewood. A small street gang known to law enforcement as the Satan Lovers established several years prior and other youth in the area experienced a takeover buildup by encroaching Disciple factions. Increasing Disciple harassment, threats, and shootings stimulated local teens to weaponize and join the Satan Lovers in a battle to maintain control of their area. Against this backdrop of Englewood, the White Flight occurred in 1964. There included a generational Italian Mafia connected teenage street gang, concerned with the approaching decimation of the Ashland Boulevard racial dividing line. They also experienced the merging of a forced maturity in all White and Black Englewood teens who are today in their seventies. Segregation and gang violence hovered over West Englewood. This was a perfect storm of racial tension and a highly outnumbered and surrounded Satan Lovers, which sidetracked teenage career goals and neighborhood peace. A must-read of every book club in the UK--What is the big attraction? Chi Town Gangster is most unique as its specifics experienced by those who lived the history are unavailable elsewhere and stem from true events uniquely attached to only one American city.
