These explanatory notes relate to the Further Education and Training Act 2007 (ISBN 9780105425076) which received Royal Assent on 23 October 2007. The Act implements proposals contained in the White Paper 'Further education: raising skills, improving life chances' (2006, Cm 6768, ISBN 9780101676823). The Act is in four parts. Part 1 makes provision for restructuring the Learning and Skills Council for England (LSC), the principal public body charged with planning and funding further education provision. It also places new duties on the LSC in relation to encouraging diversity and increasing choice in education and training. Proposals in the Act extend the powers of the LSC to design, develop and operate support services for persons and bodies involved in education or training and for educational institutions. The Act also clarifies the power of the LSC to form and invest in companies. In part 2, the Act transfers the power to incorporate further education institutions and to dissolve further education corporations from the Secretary of State to the LSC, and gives LSC the power to intervene in certain circumstances. Part 3 deals with industrial training levies, and part 4 contains miscellaneous and general provisions. The Act basically extends only to England and Wales.

Developing the next generation of leaders is critical to the success of further education colleges. However, this has to be more than talent development or succession planning if colleges are going to succeed in the highly complex and political environment in which they currently operate. This book looks at developing future leaders through a different lens. The book advocates for leadership development to be located within a sustainable leadership framework which encompasses a range of existing leadership theories. This enables leadership to be developed holistically from deep within an organisation and provides a framework for developing individuals who have the skills necessary to lead further education colleges.

Hilaire Barnett’s Constitutional and Administrative Law has consistently provided students with reliable, accessible and comprehensive coverage of the Public Law syllabus. Mapped to the common course outline, the Fourteenth edition equips students with a thorough understanding of the UK constitution’s past, present and future by analysing and illustrating the political and socio-historical contexts that have shaped the major rules and principles of constitutional and administrative law, as well as ongoing constitutional reform. This edition has been fully updated and includes discussion of the consequences of the United Kingdom's withdrawal from the European Union, including the impact on the legislative supremacy of Parliament and the relationship between EU and domestic law after departure. It also features discussion of the 2020 Coronavirus Act, with its implications for state power, and ahead of the forthcoming new SQE qualification, revised multiple choice questions on the Companion Website. Ideal for students studying constitutional and administrative law for the first time, this is an indispensable guide to the challenging concepts and legal rules in public law.

In the past three decades politicians, journalists, researchers within the academy, and neo-liberalist critics of state schools have articulated that educational research is neither meaningful nor worthwhile. Yet empirical evidence has revealed that research plays a key role in informing decisions made by educational leaders. This book explores the tools needed to conduct ethical educational research, and the contribution postgraduate research might make to the training and development of educational leaders and their thinking and practice within educational settings. Recent debates position the production and use of ethical educational research as important for Nation States' governments; Alison Taysum investigates the thinking tools required for such research and examines what good practice looks and feels like. Supported by international case studies, the study approaches and engages with the role evidence informed leadership might play in making the social justice agendas contained within the policies of a number of nations become reality.
