Madness were true originals who mixed ska and reggae rhythms with social comment and music hall humour to become a British group like no other. They were the most successful UK singles band of the 80s, offering a larky down-to-earth take on Thatcher’s Britain through hits like ‘My Girl’, ‘One Step Beyond’, ‘House Of Fun’ and ‘Baggy Trousers’. Their appeal endures to this day, Madness’ latter-day concerts having become fun-packed celebrations of one of the best-loved songbooks in British pop. Like most bands Madness had their trials and tribulations, including band disputes, accusations of racism and an eventual split. But by then they had become a unique part of British pop history. In this book, John Reed tells their colourful story with a perceptive industry eye and the help of insights from many insiders and colleagues of the band.

There is a feeling of pure delight that comes from laughing out loud while watching a hilarious movie or a TV show. Yet as funny as these lines may be, they are the work of people you will never see. The magic behind any comedy hit begins when an idea is hatched in the mind of a comedy writer and is then put down on paper. And while few of us are privy to this fascinating process, for writers Peter Desberg and Jeffrey Davis, the challenge of observing and understanding how comedy is born has culminated in a unique new book, Now That’s Funny! Desberg and Davis provide an intimate look into the minds of twenty-four of Hollywood’s funniest comedy writers, who have given us such shows as: Saturday Night Live Monk Everybody Loves Raymond The Simpsons Frasier Maude Home Improvement Valerie Modern Family Cheers There’s Something about Mary The Honeymooners Suddenly Susan Newhart Sabrina the Teenage Witch Archie Bunker’s Place The Tracey Ullman Show Wings Who’s The Boss? and more How do you get to see the creative wheels turn? The authors’ premise was simple: Using a Q and A format, they provided each writer with a story idea and let them run with it. Each of the writers was told there were no rules, no boundaries, and no limits! Because everyone started with the same concept, the authors could see how some writers jumped in and began creating, while others asked lots of questions; how some writers stuck closely to the premise, while others turned it on its head. What emerges is an entertaining look—illuminating and hilarious in turn—at the creative process behind hit TV shows and movies. If you’re one of the millions who have enjoyed watching the work of comedy writers, here is an opportunity to go behind the scenes and see the madness unfold. Now that’s funny!

A Sense Of Place Publishing is proud to include Dr James Cumes amongst its authors. The publication of his sweeping essay on the evolution of Sex and the Short Story represents the first of what we hope will be many further contributions from this esteemed writer. The book examines the evolution of the language, such as when specific words first appeared in English dictionaries, associated with sexual descriptions in novels and short stories; pans across obscenity trials and looks with some amazement at the rapid evolution from prudishness to a point where almost anything goes. It serves as a stand alone piece on the changing social mores; and also serves as an introduction to subsequent volumes of Dr James Cumes' short stories, to be published by A Sense of Place Publishing. These include Dirty Weekend and Life Is A Belly Dance. He worked his way up the Australian Foreign Affairs Department and subsequently became a distinguished Australian Ambassador to the European Union after holding diplomatic posts including Ambassador and Head of Mission in Paris, Geneva, London, Bonn and Berlin. His career has also included acting as Australian representative to the United Nations and Governor on the Board of the International Atomic Energy Agency. Cumes is now working on two books of memoirs derived from his period as High Commissioner to Nigeria. While his pursuit into erotica and the short story seems at odds with the official nature of much of James Cumes' career and other writings, his diversity of interests make him one of Australia's few truly Renaissance characters.

A true story of romance, love, and suspense Karin's Story chronicles the life of Karin Beck-Beggs, a Danish woman who was born in the middle of World War II and raised by a single, alcoholic mother after the death of her father. She was just three years old when he died. It tells of the economic difficulties she experienced as a child and how she was abused by those closest to her when they should have protected her. In this memoir, Beck-Beggs shares how she became pregnant at seventeen and a half and married the young father, an irresponsible alcoholic. The marriage didn't last long. Raised in a society and environment which was a spiritual vacuum, she came to a place of despair, emptiness, and hopelessness. One day she was so desperate, she cried out to a God she was taught didn't exist. And he answered her prayers shortly thereafter through miraculous circumstances. A young, Christian, American airman came into her life in an unusual way. Karin's Story narrates how she accepted Christ as her savior at age twenty-two and experienced many miracles over the course of her life. She didn't realize that another walk through the wilderness was waiting for her. All sales proceeds from this book will be designated for the purpose of planting Christian churches in undeveloped nations. Please address all inquiries to: [email protected].
