Full-Contact Leadership is written for men and women who hold leadership positions or aspire to leadership roles in the fire service. There are many leadership positions in the fire service, but not all of them are held by leaders. Leadership has very little to do with the color of your helmet, the bling on your collar, the stripes on your sleeve, the title on your door, the order of march, or the crease in your pants. Full-contact leadership is a commitment to drawing out the very best within others and allowing the very best in others to be expressed as excellence. Full-contact leadership is a career-long, ever-challenging, never-ending, self-initiated, self-sustained personal research, development, and improvement program. Full-contact leadership is never about you; it’s always about them. In Full-Contact Leadership, Chiefs Flood and Avillo examine what makes a leader and, more importantly, what makes a leader effective in today’s fire service. This text discusses the various types of leaders, how they communicate, discipline, delegate, motivate, and set expectations for the people they lead. Flood and Avillo also take a hard look at what hinders or blocks effective leadership and what steps to take to foster and instill leadership in your department.

Put your flawed foot forward. Pick up most leadership books and you’ll find strategies for leveraging your power and minimizing your areas of weakness. But think about the leaders whose names have gone down in history. Most of them were so messed up that, if they were looking for work today, no executive placement service would give them the time of day. God’s criteria for choosing leaders runs counter to the conventional wisdom. Our culture equates strength with effectiveness, but God favors leaders who know the value of brokenness. In Leading With a Limp, you’ll discover what makes flawed leaders so successful. They’re not preoccupied with protecting their image, they are undaunted by chaos and complexity, they are ready to risk failure in moving an organization from what is to what should be. God chooses leaders who aren’t deceived by the myths of power and control, but who realize that God’s power is found in brokenness. If you are a leader–or if you have been making excuses to avoid leading–find out how you can take full advantage of your weakness. A limping leader is the person God uses to accomplish amazing things. To go deeper, check out the Leading With a Limp Workbook.

Too many people assume the timeless principles of true leadership—of helping others achieve their full potential—don’t apply Monday through Friday during work hours or in any circumstance where a paycheck is involved. In GREATER THAN YOURSELF, Steve Farber proves them wrong: in this powerful and inspiring story, Farber shows that the goal of a genuine leader is to help others—teammates, employees, and colleagues—become more capable, confident, and accomplished than they are themselves. Through the actions of a forward-thinking and extraordinarily successful CEO, Farber reveals the three keys to achieving this: Expand Yourself, Give Yourself, and Replicate Yourself. This new edition includes a special afterword by UCSD’s Dr Alan Daly and Neville Billimoria featuring the social science behind the concept of Greater Than Yourself. Filled with actionable principles and innovative ideas, GREATER THAN YOURSELF is perhaps the most powerful message today’s business leaders can learn.

'This book is a gift to organizations, showing their employees how to achieve win-win-win solutions by being their better selves, being better collaborators and still helping the bottom line. James is a deep thinker with a sophisticated understanding of human nature. A masterpiece!' Russell Lemle, Former Chief Psychologist, San Francisco VA Health Care System Most of us believe that good collaboration depends upon how cooperative our colleagues are. That's a costly mistake, says Grayson James, international collaborative performance consultant, leadership coach, and 6th degree black belt in Aikido. Integrating understandings from organizational leadership, psychology, language action theory, martial arts, and other mind-body disciplines, James gives us an eye-opening view of what really happens when organizational collaboration goes well, and what to do when it doesn't. Through personal insights and stories, this book brings to life the five principles and the three key conversations that enable us to make Full Contact with our colleagues. And the simple practices provided help us recognize the action inherent in every word we speak, the role our body plays, and how our attention determines the success of our collaborative performance. James shows that we ourselves are always where the real action is whenever we're trying to get things done with other people. This is great news, because it means we each have the power to transform our collaborative performance, regardless of our circumstances, no matter who we're working with.

Jørgen Vig Knudstorp (CEO LEGO Group) says about this book: First of all I want to thank you Martin, because you took the time and energy and used your intellect to write this book; a book which you asked me to write a few comments about. Seldom have I to such a degree identified myself with the storyline of a non-fictional book and seldom during my recent readings have I thought - "this, this is me" or "this is exactly how I felt and reacted" - rightly or wrongly, for good or for bad. Just as often I thought - "but that's exactly what I do but it's not working", or "God, my team and my management are really "deteriorating" or "maintaining" instead of "developing". Just as often I thought "but that step 2 with the self-esteem based characteristics, that's what others have made fun of and said I did wrong", even though it felt right. This is definitely the way forward in future management instead of hanging on to and being stuck in the past. The main message for me has been the importance of emotional and relational management of teams and the organisation alongside the rational and contextual. The central point being how the relational is just as much a discipline and experience that is hard to learn properly in line with the professional and contextual. The book maps out my next ten years as a leader and makes it evident that a gut feeling is actually an ability of its own. I find that there is so much material here and so much more to think about. This book is just the beginning of much more insight. I've gone back and looked in my notes where I've written: "Christ, this is really amazing, it's just so me to be me. I'm best when I'm just me. The better I become, the more I'm just me and the other way round." In an article in the daily Børsen about myself, the title "This Kierkegaardian self-acknowledgement" was used. So I would like to say thank you so VERY much. This book has done me an enormous favour and will be one for many more leaders. Jørgen Vig Knud
