One of the goals for the proposed book is to bring together leading experts in the world working in multidisciplinary areas including epidemiology, biomechanics, experimental and analytical research, physical modeling, and clinical aspects of whiplash injury. The contributing authors have submitted chapters in their area of expertise. 39 Chapters are included that cover the above aspects.Contributions by the federal government, industry, health care professionals, academic researchers, and various experts from the United States and abroad are included.

With the second edition of The Whiplash Encyclopedia, Robert Ferrari revisits the notion that whiplash is an example of illness induced by society, in general, and by physicians in particular. The second edition takes the work out of understanding all the different dimensions of whiplash, be it why some people get chronic neck pain and others do not, what causes jaw pain, what therapies work and which do not, how we can understand the effect that psychosocial factors have on recovery, what effect litigation and insurance systems have on recovery, and many other topics. The Whiplash Encyclopedia leaves no topic on whiplash uncovered, and can be used in any medicolegal practice. The next time you have a question about whiplash, the answer is likely to be found in The Whiplash Encyclopedia. The Whiplash Encyclopedia, Second Edition explores new theories being heralded to explain chronic whiplash; discusses Central Sensitization; and includes a new chapter in whiplash mythology. In addition, it expands on the knowledge of what causes (and what does not cause) the many neurological and cognitive symptoms reported by whiplash patients. The second edition also investigates the Whiplash Cultures and countries where chronic whiplash is epidemic and examines those cultures by laying them next to countries that, despite having motor vehicle collisions as frequently as elsewhere in the world, and frequently having physicians diagnose acute whiplash, rarely or uncommonly has anyone taking the stage as chronic whiplash characters.

For the 4th edition of Trauma Biomechanics all existing chapters referring to traffic and sports have been revised and updated. New scientific knowledge and changes in legal defaults (such as norms and standards of crash tests) have been integrated. Additionally one chapter has been added where biomechanical aspects of injuries affected by high energies are communicated in a new way. The mechanical basics for ballistics and explosions are described and the respective impacts on human bodies are discussed. The new edition with the additional chapter therefore is addressed to a broader audience than the previous one.

Whiplash is one of the most debated and controversial musculoskeletal conditions. This is, in part, due to the often compensable nature of the injury and the fact that a precise pathoanatomical diagnosis is not usually achievable. Whiplash: Evidence base for clinical practice presents the evidence underpinning the complexity of whiplash associated disorders (WADs), from the specifics of current physiological and psychological manifestations of the condition to broader issues such as compensation and litigation. This new text will be essential reading for physiotherapy, chiropractic, osteopathy

Whiplash injuries can have debilitating consequences for those who suffer them. However, some of the increase in whiplash claims will have been due to fraud or exaggeration. The Government must tighten up the requirements for motor insurance claims and ensure that insurers honour their commitment to reduce premiums. The Government should consider requiring claimants to provide proof that they have either been seen by a doctor or attended A&E shortly after the accident. The MPs also note that their previous recommendation on making the links between insurers and other parties involved with claims more transparent has been ignored. The absence of comprehensive statistics about road traffic accidents means that it is impossible to relate the increasing number of personal injury claims in recent years to the number of accidents. Data collection about road accidents needs to be improved help to assist detection of fraudulent personal injury claims and help highways authorities improve road safety by targeting spending on accident black-spots. The Committee also supports the proposal for an accreditation scheme for medical practitioners who provide medical reports in relation to whiplash claims. Access to justice could also be impaired by Government proposals to switch whiplash claims between £1,000 and £5,000 to the small claims court, particularly for people who do not feel confident to represent themselves against insurers who will use legal professionals to contest claims. Ways in which use of the small claims track could be combined with the routine submission of expert evidence should be considered

Safety or comfort? Can you truly have one without the other? Is it feasible to have both? Although by no means the only factor, a deep understanding of biomechanics plays a leading role in the design of work and workplaces that are both pain and injury free. Standing firmly on the foundation built by the previous edition, the second edition of Biom

A number of books and research papers have been published on trauma and biomechanics.Theyhavesofarnotbeenrealisticallyintegrated.Thebasicaim ofthisbookistopresentauni?edapproachbetweentheengineeringandm- ical professions. The available engineering analyses and mathematical models can be interlinked and glued together with the medical ?ndings by means of surgeries and X-rays/scans. They can be translated into vastly developed computer programs predicting e?ects of plasticity, temperature, cracking, and crushing with and without muscles and other interlocking phenomenon. The available mathematical-cum-engineering model on trauma and bone mechanics are then linked to the ?nite element analysis and to a computer programinwhichprovisionsaremadetocaterforallpossibleeventualitiesand medicalparameters.Theproblemencounteredbysurgeriescanbeeasilybe- corporated into hybrid ?nite element computer programs such as PROGRAM ISOPARusedinthisbook.Inallcasestudiesthesurgicalin?uenceshavebeen considered together with the bone material data for both the operational, nonoperational and overloading behaviour of the human body structure. In all circumstances the human body structure and its important elements were treated as composite. The bone–blood interaction has been incorporated in ordertoobtainrealisticsolutions.Materialpropertiesinthree-dimensionhave always been considered in throughout in various investigations. Engineering analysis of trauma is being continuously developed taking into consideration the ever increasing changes in analytical, design, safety, and manufacturing techniques. The engineering advances in that direction are steadily gaining international acceptance in the wide sense of the medical profession.

This book draws upon a variety of the author's experiences during more than 25 years in automotive safety. It gives an introduction to plain film radiographs (x-rays), computed tomograms (CTs), and magnetic resonance images (MRIs) such that vehicle safety professionals can use these techniques to help piece together the puzzle and provide a better understanding of the relationship between vehicle crash scenarios and occupant injury. For those with a primarily vehicle background, Neck Injury provides an overview of how x-rays, CTs, and MRIs may be used as a source of information to help analyze vehicle crashes and the associated injuries. For those with a clinical background, the book provides insight into how injuries relate to the vehicle crash. Chapters cover: Anatomy Imaging Injuries and Injury Mechanisms
