During presidential campaigns, candidates crisscross the country nonstop—visiting swing states, their home turf, and enemy territory. But do all those campaign visits make a difference when Election Day comes? If so, how and under what conditions? Do they mobilize the partisan faithful or persuade undecided voters? What do campaigns try to achieve through campaign visits—and when do they succeed? I’m Here to Ask for Your Vote is a comprehensive and compelling examination of the strategy and effectiveness of presidential campaign visits. Christopher J. Devine uses an original database of presidential and vice-presidential campaign visits from 2008 through 2020 to estimate the effects of visits on vote choice and turnout, both among individual voters and within counties. He finds that campaign visits do not usually influence voting behavior, but when they do, most often it is by persuading undecided voters—as was the case for John McCain in 2008 and even Donald Trump in 2020. Challenging the recent emphasis on candidates playing to their base, this book suggests that persuasion is still a viable campaign strategy, in which candidate visits may play a major role. I’m Here to Ask for Your Vote is an authoritative and engaging analysis designed for scholars, strategists, students, and other readers interested in understanding how campaign visits—and campaigns more broadly—shape presidential election outcomes.

LINQ is the project name for a set of extensions to the .NET Framework that provide a generic approach to querying data from different data sources. LINQ made its debut in Visual Studio 2008, and became a must–have skill for .NET developers. For more information about LINQ, you can check out www.linqdev.com. Starting with code and ending with code and tailored for the VB language, Pro LINQ: Language Integrated Query in VB 2008 is a veritable treasury of LINQ examples that will save you hours, even days, of research time. Keeping you focused on the relevant LINQ principles, expert author Joseph Rattz, Jr., and VB specialist Dennis Hayes provide examples for complex models that you won't find anywhere else. In most books, you'll find plenty of simple examples to demonstrate how to use a method, but authors rarely show how to use the more complex prototypes. Pro LINQ: Language Integrated Query in VB 2008 is different. Demonstrating the overwhelming majority of LINQ operators and protoypes, Joseph Rattz, Jr., and Dennis Hayes condense their extensive experience and expertise into a desk companion that is essential for any serious .NET professional. Rather than obscure the relevant LINQ principles in code examples by focusing on a demonstration application you have no interest in writing, this book cuts right to the chase of each LINQ operator, method, or class. However, where complexity is necessary to truly demonstrate an issue, the examples are right there in the thick of it. For example, code samples demonstrating how to handle concurrency conflicts actually create concurrency conflicts so you can step through the code and see them unfold. Most books tell you about the simple stuff, while few books warn you of the pitfalls. Where Pro LINQ: Language Integrated Query in VB 2008 returns your investment is in the hours, and sometimes days, spent by the authors determining why something may not work as expected. Sometimes this results in an innocent–looking paragraph that may take you a minute to read and understand, but took days to research and explain. Face it, most technical books while informative, are dull. LINQ need not be dull. Written with a sense of humor, this book will attempt to entertain you on your journey through the wonderland of LINQ and VB 2008.

It is the 1940s as Garrison Yokum grows up in Betsy Layne, Kentucky. He enjoys sitting on the back porch with his cousins, watching trains haul coal to big cities, dreaming of what lies beyond the mountains, and traveling along the “big road,” also known as US Route 23, with his parents on Saturdays. But when Garrison is seven, work becomes even more difficult, dangerous, and precarious for his coal miner father, setting into motion a chain of events that ultimately leads them to Ann Arbor, Michigan, for a new life. From that point on, Route 23 becomes a focal point in Garrison’s life. Decades later and now approaching retirement, Garrison makes another life-changing decision as he nears completion of a documentary on the migration of families from rural east Kentucky to the cities along Route 23. After he sets out on a road trip with his professional photographer granddaughter and two student interns, Garrison explores and captures life along the long, important American highway that helped many families secure better futures beyond the mountains of southern Appalachia. The Big Road is a generational story that documents the experiences of those who migrated from southern Appalachia to bigger cities in the north by way of a memorable American highway.

Farmers, shopkeepers, businessmen, politicians--the fathers of the presidents of the United States have come from a wide variety of professions and all walks of life. In many cases, they provided their sons and future presidents with a political philosophy that they carried to the White House. In a few instances, the politics of the son differed significantly from that of his father. This unique reference work provides biographies of both the biological and adoptive fathers of the 41 men who have served as president of the United States. Were the personalities of the father and son similar? What role did the father play in the son's upbringing? How did the father's view influence the son's? These questions and others are covered in each entry, in addition to the biographical sketches of the fathers of the presidents.

The early Paleozoic of northwestern and west-central Colorado is represented by continental shelf and continental shelf marginal sedimentary rocks of Late Cambrian, Ordovician, and Late Devonian ages. Differentially epeirogenic movements along fracture systems having Precambrian origins affected sedimentation patterns and probably mostly account for intervening times of erosion or nondeposition; activity along these tectonic elements persisted into the Neogene and possibly continues. These tectonic elements are west-north-west, south-southeast, and northeast trending fracture systems and an east-trending aulacogen in the approximate area of the modern Uinta Mountains. North-central Colorado was emergent land throughout most of this time and shed clastic sediments at varying rates to the west and southwest. Episodic continental motion and the effects of the Antler orogeny to the west are probably the direct causes of these epeirogenic movements.
