When we hear about highly successful people, we all assume these individuals have always been successful in life, or perhaps they were just "lucky." This is because we only see the finished product - we see what their life is like now...the triumph. Even if we read about their failures, we still think that these people easily overcame them because they are currently so successful. Through the author's unique writing perspective, the reader creates his or her own image of the individuals within the chapters as they face insurmountable struggles and challenges. He or she will see that failures provide us with hidden opportunities, and that with a few basic principles, success can be achieved by anyone. We all have the potential within us to be great.

Today everyone—whether they know it or not—is in the emotional transportation business. More and more, success is won by creating compelling stories that have the power to move partners, shareholders, customers, and employees to action. Simply put, if you can’t tell it, you can’t sell it. And this book tells you how to do both. Historically, stories have always been igniters of action, moving people to do things. But only recently has it become clear that purposeful stories—those created with a specific mission in mind—are absolutely essential in persuading others to support a vision, dream or cause. Peter Guber, whose executive and entrepreneurial accomplishments have made him a success in multiple industries, has long relied on purposeful story telling to motivate, win over, shape, engage and sell. Indeed, what began as knack for telling stories as an entertainment industry executive has, through years of perspiration and inspiration, evolved into a set of principles that anyone can use to achieve their goals. In Tell to Win, Guber shows how to move beyond soulless Power Point slides, facts, and figures to create purposeful stories that can serve as powerful calls to action. Among his techniques: * Capture your audience’s attention first, fast and foremost * Motivate your listeners by demonstrating authenticity * Build your tell around “what’s in it for them” * Change passive listeners into active participants * Use “state-of-the-heart” technology online and offline to make sure audience commitment remains strong To validate the power of telling purposeful stories, Guber includes in this book a remarkably diverse number of “voices” —master tellers with whom he’s shared experiences. They include YouTube founder Chad Hurley, NBA champion Pat Riley, clothing designer Normal Kamali, “Mission to Mars” scientist Gentry Lee, Under Armour CEO Kevin Plank, former South African president Nelson Mandela, magician David Copperfield, film director Steven Spielberg, novelist Nora Roberts, rock legend Gene Simmons, and physician and author Deepak Chopra. After listening to this extraordinary mix of voices, you’ll know how to craft, deliver—and own—a story that is truly compelling, one capable of turning others into viral advocates for your goal.

After the white Bronco, after the bloody glove, after the media frenzy and the verdict that set O.J. Simpson free, Daniel Petrocelli came to pick up the pieces. Outraged by the disastrous miscarriage of justice, the family of murder victim Ronald Goldman sought justice in civil court—their last chance to go after Simpson. To represent them, they hired Petrocelli, a respected attorney who had never before tried a criminal case. In order to win the case, Petrocelli would have to prove that O.J. Simpson was a killer. The physical evidence connecting Simpson to the murders was rock solid, but in the criminal trial, evidence was not enough. To bring the families justice, Petrocelli would have to do something that the District Attorney had not been able to do: confront O.J. Simpson face-to-face. Called “the best book on the subject” by the San Francisco Chronicle, Triumph of Justice is the definitive account of the Simpson murders and their aftermath. In the long, twisted history of the trial of the century, Daniel Petrocelli has the final word.

Originally published in 1984. In 1888 the British observer James Bryce declared "the government of cities" to be "the one conspicuous failure of the United States." During the following two decades, urban reformers would repeat Bryce's words with ritualistic regularity; nearly a century later, his comment continues to set the tone for most assessments of nineteenth-century city government. Yet by the end of the century, as Jon Teaford argues in this important reappraisal, American cities boasted the most abundant water supplies, brightest street lights, grandest parks, largest public libraries, and most efficient systems of transportation in the world. Far from being a "conspicuous failure," municipal governments of the late nineteenth century had successfully met challenges of an unprecedented magnitude and complexity. The Unheralded Triumph draws together the histories of the most important cities of the Gilded Age—especially New York, Chicago, Boston, Philadelphia, St. Louis, and Baltimore—to chart the expansion of services and the improvement of urban environments between 1870 and 1900. It examines the ways in which cities were transformed, in a period of rapid population growth and increased social unrest, into places suitable for living. Teaford demonstrates how, during the last decades of the nineteenth century, municipal governments adapted to societal change with the aid of generally compliant state legislatures. These were the years that saw the professionalization of city government and the political accommodation of the diverse ethnic, economic, and social elements that compose America's heterogeneous urban society. Teaford acknowledges that the expansion of urban services dangerously strained city budgets and that graft, embezzlement, overcharging, and payroll-padding presented serious problems throughout the period. The dissatisfaction with city governments arose, however, not so much from any failure to achieve concrete results as from the conflicts between those hostile groups accommodated within the newly created system: "For persons of principle and gentlemen who prized honor, it seemed a failure yet American municipal government left as a legacy such achievements as Central Park, the new Croton Aqueduct, and the Brooklyn Bridge, monuments of public enterprise that offered new pleasures and conveniences for millions of urban citizens."

"Destined To Triumph" is a story of an African child who has seen it all. Julius Babyetsiza poses a universal question as what is the return on investment in education in Uganda/Africa given that the continent has remained crawling technologically when the rest of the world is running. He sounds an oracle to Uganda's political and university leaders to build knowledge-driven national economy; else “History catches them on the wrong side”. Woe, however, “The falcon cannot hear the falconer.” Find his views regarding how to address disheartening graduates' unemployment problem in Uganda - letters to Ugandan President and calls to leaders of universities. One of the hallmarks of “Destined To Triumph” is the suggested new leadership paradigm shift that will enthrone universities/university leaders as the guardians of political and socio-economic accountability.Striking highlights of his story include: a socially rich life and untimely death and spectacular mourning of the death of his father; his survival of a vicious attack of his leg by mysterious swelling which was cured through the miraculous intervention of his already divorced step-mother; his perseverance through primary and secondary school education with no reliable source of income; how he won a scholarship to study Economics and Statistics at the Odessa State Economic University in the Ukraine, former Soviet Union where he had flamboyant study time after failing to beat the intense competition to enter Makerere University – the only one in Uganda at the time; his shying-away from the love of Novikava, a young, beautiful classmate from Moldova who, disappointed, showers her love on another student from the Congo, bears him a son and gets occasion to taunt Babyetsiza (in the presence of her husband) with the searing comment, 'You know that child should have been yours'; his failure to get a job for several years in Uganda after his return with a Master's degree; his marriage to a beautiful Rwandan con woman whom he met at his computer training institute in Kampala and who deserts him after stealing from him dear sums of money with the connivance of witch-doctors; his dabbling in advocacy for sustainable use of the environment by virtue of his employment with a local civil society organization, which finally sacks him for his 'pursuance of political interests'.The author, Julius Babyetsiza, can be contacted on: - Email: [email protected]; Tel: (+256)782-188904. Tragedy to Triumph-The Story of Tom's Heart provides an up-close and personal look at the journeys of two individuals facing death as they present their individual perspectives as the donor family and the recipient. There are very few stories in life that grip you like the loss of a child. When that story hits home, it can feel like your very heart is being ripped out. This story is about life and death. When a family member or friend suffers end-stage organ failure, the pain is different but very real. Loved ones watch as you wither away before their eyes dying, waiting, and hoping for the ultimate gift, the gift of life, so they can go on living. Tragedy to Triumph-The Story of Tom's Heart is the harrowing and heart-wrenching tragedy that struck him and his family. At the worst moment any family should ever have to deal with, the parents said 'yes' to organ, eye, and tissue donation so the lives of others could be saved and enhanced. For Tom's mother, it offered hope in the midst of despair, a purpose in the midst of tragedy, and light in the midst of the darkest night of her life. By saying yes to donation, another mother and family did not have to wonder, wait, or face the death of their son, brother, or friend. Pete Radigan, who was in end-stage heart failure at Columbia Hospital, unsure if he would live or die, received Tom's heart-the gift of life. This is their story...
