Excerpt from From Czar to Bolshevik The study so made, as day by day the extraordinary kaleidoscopic events passed before the eyes, proved of absorbing interest, and left me deeply impressed with their extreme importance alike to this country and to Russia herself. The occurrences which led directly to the present position are set down in diary form in these pages. I have refrained from criticism. For the sequence of events appears to furnish its own answers to the thoughtful man. But in the national interests the diary has a further object. It is of the highest importance that the true causes for the present appalling condition of Russia should be understood, and the question be regarded with that breadth of view and the clarity and coolness in passing judgment with which our race has become credited by the foreigner. At present there is a strong feeling amongst the peoples of the Entente that Russia has let us in. That the loss of the Eastern front has proved a disaster of the first magnitude is obvious to all. As a direct consequence we are now engaged upon the greatest battle in history and fighting for our lives, or, which we value more, our national honour. Excerpt from From Czar to Bolshevik The inquiry which took me to Russia last year had an economic rather than a political character. Within a very short space of time, however, it became evident that very little progress could be made with the former aspect until I had become conversant with the political conditions of the New Russia, so entirely at variance with the old, and thus be in a position to gauge their effects economically upon this country. The study so made, as day by day the extraordinary kaleidoscopic events passed before the eyes, proved of absorbing interest, and left me deeply impressed with their extreme importance alike to this country and to Russia herself. The occurrences which led directly to the present position are set down in diary form in these pages. I have refrained from criticism. At present there is a strong feeling amongst the peoples of the Entente that Russia has "let us in." That the loss of the Eastern front has proved a disaster of the first magnitude is obvious to all. Excerpt from Bolshevik Russia HE Englishman has a traditional dis inclination for concerning himself with foreign countries. He has been accustomed to sum up their national characteristics in a phrase - usually more or less offensive and relegate them to their place on the map: Hitherto he has known little of world history and cared less. For him, his own has been the only country that counts. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from The Bolsheviks in the Tsarist Duma With these words Pravda took farewell of the Third Duma, expressing thereby the general attitude of the workers and peasants. The Fourth Duma was to follow in the footsteps of the Third. The electoral law remained the same, and therefore the majority in the new Duma was bound to be as Black Hundred as before. There was no doubt that the activities of the Fourth Duma would also be directed against the workers and that its legislation would be of no use either-to the workers or the peasantry. In spite of these considerations the social-democratic Party decided to take an' active part in the elections as it had done in those for the Second and Third Dumas. The experience of the preceding years had shown the great importance of an election campaign from the standpoint of agitation, and the important role played by Social Democratic fractions in the Duma. Our fractions, while refusing to take part in the so called' 'positive' 'work of legislation, used the Duma rostrum for revolutionary agitation. The work of the Social Democratic fractions outside the Duma was still more important they were becoming the organising centres of Party work in Russia. Therefore our Party decided that active participation in the campaign was necessary. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from The Bolshevik Revolution: Its Rise and Meaning The memorable uprising of the Russian people indicates that not even the keenest discernment can always accurately appraise the immediate course of events dependent upon the action of the working class. There were but few among Socialists in Western and Middle Europe who held the belief that the War would lead to working-class control in Russia, and the conse quent removal of the gravest menace to a democratised Germany. Wide difference in conditions notwith standing, the intensification of work, never to be assuaged by proposals for industrial harmony between Capital and Labour, may lead to action here as unexpected as the events that mark the recent history of Russia. Though the members of the British Socialist Party were among the first to welcome the March Revolu tion they were not without misgiving as to the practical worth of the Provisional Government. The Revolution had been made in the name of the solidarity of the working classes and in order that the power of the possessors of land and capital might be abridged in the interests of the common people. The British Socialist Party was, Ibelieve, the first of European Socialist organisations to see that the predecessors of the Bolsheviks had no intention of erecting a social organisation based on the truths that Labour is the source of all economic values and that enduring peace will only be obtained by the international agreement of peeples. In our Party organ The Call, we urgedthat the taking of power by the Soviets was the one course that would save Russia from destruction at the hands of her enemies, within and without; the ultimate acceptance of that view and the administrative success of the Soviets prove the wisdom of that policy. With the general policy of the Bolsheviks the British Socialist Party is in hearty agreement. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
