Los Angeles, 1936, broke, hungry and without wings. Like many Depression-era tramps, Jake Hollow is drawn to California's siren call. Unlike other hobos, he carries a telegram from an old buddy, inviting Jake to live the dream at rainbow's dead end, flying for the movies. As Jake rides the rails into L.A., the East Coast Mob, led by Benjamin "Bugsy" Siegel, arrives in style to stake its claim on the City of Angels. With Prohibition repealed, mobsters turn to expanding illegal gambling operations in Southern California. To avoid the law they can't bribe, the casinos are loaded onto old steamships and anchored outside the three-mile limit off the coast. What's illegal on land is vaguely legit offshore. As the money rolls in on the tide it carries the bodies of those who don't play by the rules-Mob rules, Hollywood rules. And Jake Hollow rarely plays or flies by the rules.

Freddie Steinmark started at safety for the undefeated University of Texas Longhorns in 1969. In the thrilling “Game of the Century,” a come-from-behind victory against Arkansas that ensured Texas the national championship, Steinmark played with pain in his left leg. Two days later, X-rays revealed a bone tumor so large that it seemed a miracle Steinmark could walk, let alone play football. Within a week of the Arkansas game, his leg was amputated. A gritty, undersized player, Steinmark had quickly become a fan favorite at Texas. What he endured during the Longhorns’ memorable 1969 season, and what he encountered afterward, captivated not only Texans but the country at large. Americans watched closely as Steinmark confronted life’s ultimate challenge, and his openness during his battle against savage odds helped reframe the national conversation surrounding cancer and the ongoing race for a cure. Written with unfettered access to the Steinmark family and archives, Freddie Steinmark: Faith, Family, Football is the exploration of a brief but full life, one that began humbly but ended on a grand stage. It is a fitting tribute to a legendary Longhorn whose photograph, emblazoned with the word “Heart,” flashes on the Freddie Steinmark Scoreboard’s Jumbotron prior to each home football game in UT’s Darrell K Royal–Texas Memorial Stadium at Joe Jamail Field.

Quest: Finding Freddie By: Thomas Richard Spradlin About the Book Quest: Finding Freddie is the narrative of a case that Richard Spradlin had in 1976 as a General Partner in the Washington, D. C., law firm of Clifford & Warnke. It concerns the search for one of his firm's clients (known to his wife and friends as "Freddie") who had suddenly "gone missing" in Lagos, Nigeria. A devout Jew, Freddie had simply disappeared on Saturday, August 14, 1976 (the Jewish Sabbath) while on a business trip to Nigeria. His disappearance was particularly disturbing since it occurred not long after the June 27, 1976 rescue by Israel Defense Forces of hostages being held by terrorists at the Entebbe airport in Uganda. As spectacular and heroic as the Entebbe rescue mission had been, it had caused extreme embarrassment for Uganda's President, Idi Amin Dada Oumee, who was also serving at the time as Chairman of the Organization of African Unity (OAU). In Nigeria, the political situation was even more uncertain due to tensions following an attempted military coup which had taken place on February 13, 1976. Although that coup failed, it nonetheless had resulted in the assassination of Nigeria's Head of State, General Murtala Rufai Ramat Muhammed. It was against this background that Spradlin was sent by his law firm on the quest to find Freddie.
