During the 1990s, Franz West’s work moved in new and innovative stylistic directions, as his career was solidified through important international exhibitions. This publication delves into this significant decade in an effort to contextualize the evolution of West’s singular practice. The 1990s proved critical in the development of the idiosyncratic style for which West is still known today. His key innovations from this period—which included the addition of exuberant color to his papier-mâché forms, the incorporation of furniture both as art object and as social incubator, and the inclusion of work by other artists in his own installations—resulted in dynamic, frequently interactive installations that helped to expand the possibilities of sculpture and the ways in which art is experienced. Produced on the occasion of David Zwirner’s 2014 exhibition in New York, this fully illustrated publication gives an in-depth overview of the decade, arguably the most important of the artist’s lengthy career. It features essays by noted West scholars Eva Badura-Triska and Veit Loers, as well as a personal account by Bernhard Riff on video collaborations made with the artist throughout the 1990s.

The book presents an analysis of the transition from unemployment to self-employment and its subsidisation with the so-called "bridging allowance" in Germany. On the basis of econometric models, the determinants and the success of self-employment among former unemployed are estimated at the individual as well as at the firm level. By comparing different groups of the formerly unemployed, it becomes evident that self-employment is one successful route out of unemployment, as self-employment proves to be more stable than paid-employment. Therefore, the bridging allowance reaches its aim of regaining stable employment for the unemployed. However, this programme fails to create additional employment in the newly founded firms.

Art historian and conceptual artist Michael Huey returns again and again to the topics loss, legacy, and the archive in his work, including that of a journalist covering historical architecture in central Europe and beyond. In search of a variety of expressions of life and passion, he has for more than 30 years written about interiors—home, in the broadest sense—for newspapers and magazines, starting with The Home Forum, the arts and letters page of The Christian Science Monitor, and continuing for The World of Interiors, German AD, nest, and Cabana. This book contains a selection of Michael Huey’s very best stories, comprising over 70 superb articles accompanied by the author’s inspiring photographs. Through this lens we travel from hidden gems of the Baroque to forgotten places of the 19th century, to Vienna’s Art Nouveau, and on to recent times. But always he shows us homes, interiors, and people lovingly interwoven with art.
