The present edition has been compared with an autograph copy, and notes have been supplied, while, in order to make clearer Mr. Van der Kemp's political course in Holland, it has seemed necessary to add an account, from his own point of view, of the Patriot movement in Holland, and of some of his countrymen who took part with him in this movement, and also in behalf of the American Revolution, especially the Barons van der Capellen.
