This volume collects together the presentations at the Eighth International Conference on Foundations of Computer-Aided Process Design, FOCAPD-2014, an event that brings together researchers, educators, and practitioners to identify new challenges and opportunities for process and product design. The chemical industry is currently entering a new phase of rapid evolution. The availability of low-cost feedstocks from natural gas is causing renewed investment in basic chemicals in the OECD, while societal pressures for sustainability and energy security continue to be key drivers in technology development and product selection. This dynamic environment creates opportunities to launch new products and processes and to demonstrate new methodologies for innovation, synthesis and design. FOCAPD-2014 fosters constructive interaction among thought leaders from academia, industry, and government and provides a showcase for the latest research in product and process design. - Focuses exclusively on the fundamentals and applications of computer-aided design for the process industries. - Provides a fully archival and indexed record of the FOCAPD14 conference - Aligns the FOCAPD series with the ESCAPE and PSE series

The objectives of the conference were: to define and discuss the problems of plant operations; report on the development and application of computing and computation tools and techniques for solving these problems; and bring together leading academic and industrial representatives to promote increased future interaction and cooperation in defining and solving operations problems. The participants came from 15 different countries; approximately 40% were from academic institutions, 40% from operating companies and 20% from engineering, software and other companies serving the process industries. This diversity of backgrounds and opinions served to make the conference vital and informative and is reflected in this proceedings volume.

Batch processes are used to manufacture many fine organic chemicals, and as such they can be considered to underpin much of the modern chemical industry. Despite widespread use and a consequent huge contribution to wealth creation, batch processes have attracted limited attention outside the user industries. Batch chemicals processing uses a number of core techniques and technologies, such as scheduling and sequence control, agitation and batch filtration. The combination of these technologies with often complex chemistry, the multi-purpose nature of much of this type of plant, the distinctive safety and environmental issues, and a fast moving commercial environment makes the development of a successful batch process a considerable challenge for the chemist or engineer. The literature on the topics covered in this book is fragmented and often not easily accessible, so this handbook has been written to address this problem and to bring together design and process analysis methods in the core areas of batch process design. By combining the science and pragmatism required in the development of successful batch processes this new book provides answers to real problems in an accessible and concise way. Written by an international team of authors drawn from industry, consulting and academe, this book is an essential part of the library of any chemist, technologist or engineer working on the development of new or existing batch processes.

Improved process engineering in general, and better process design specifically, hold the key to technology advancement in the chemical as well as biological, electronic, and other processing industries. This volume contains the proceedings of the Third International Conference on Foundations of Computer-Aided Process Design, which brought together engineers, scientists and graduate student researchers from a number of industrial, academic and government institutions throughout the world to assess and discuss the current status and future directions of computer aided process engineering. The specific objectives of the conference were to provide a forum for an in-depth review of the current state-of-the-art in chemical process design as well as an introduction to process and product design in other disciplines, an evaluation of current and future needs in process design, a formulation of new research directions in computer-aided process design and an examination of educational needs in chemical engineering design.
