In recent years, attention has been given in the foster family care literature to adolescents' readiness for living on their own following aging out of their foster care placement. This book offers ideas on ways to help adolescents master the tasks required to successfully prepare for independent living following discharge from foster care. It is practice-oriented and draws upon the experience of researchers, trainers, consultants, and families. The chapters in Part 1 examine the various dimensions of the problem including the concept of interdependence as the goal of services for this population. It also discusses recruiting foster parents, examining adolescent development, and the need for these young people to mourn their losses before they can move on. Part 2 considers meeting the challenges of preparing these adolescents for life after foster care from the perspective of policy and program. Emphasis is placed on the importance of involving biological parents as resources for adolescents and the resources that black foster parents offer to teenagers in their care. Part 3 focuses on practice methods and strategies in work with adolescents and their foster parents. Also discussed are the needs of minority teenagers; problems of maltreatment; discipline; and assessment tools that can measure the independent-living skills of adolescents. (Contains over 300 references.) (JDM)

This book provides insight into the evolution and status quo of the youth employment situation in 13 OECD countries. In addition to the state of the labor market for young people, the survey centers on the phases of transition from school to work as well as the institutional design of the labor market itself, in vocational education and in active youth employment policy. The report also focuses on recent reform projects to combat youth unemployment and the description of best practices with the same objective. The countries surveyed are Australia, Austria, Canada, Denmark, Finland, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, the United Kingdom, and the United States. Alexander Schumann and Eric Thode are project managers of the economic division at the Bertelsmann Stiftung.

This volume covers various medical aspects of adoption and fostering procedures, criticizes some of them and puts forward recommendations for future developments. The authors include social workers, paediatricians and psychologists, a neurologist, geneticist and gynaecologist, and the book therefore covers a broad spectrum of subjects. These include a section on general medical examinations of adoptees and the psychiatric assessment of prospective adopters, and a section on children with 'medical handicaps' (both physical and mental, and the handicaps ensuing from an unstable biological background). The final sections deals with some special issues, including inter-racial adoption, fostering for disturbed adolescents and a discussion on artificial insemination by donor, viewed as a form of adoption. This broad base makes the book valuable reading for all those involved with adoption services, from paediatricians to local authority adoption workers and adoption agency staff, and all who have more than a passing interest in the medical issues of adoption and foster care.
