Excerpt from Forestry, Vol. 10: A Journal of Forest and Estate Manangement Whilst pleading for oral instruction on behalf of the young forester, we were first to give him special teaching through the press, and we do not propose to vacate the position. Material of permanent educational value will continue to appear in these pages. And, indeed, the programme of our greatest Forestry Schools may suggest the scope and limits of such material. Correspondence and questions from earnest students are solicited. Dining the last three months, our name has been much in the mouths of that general public which so largely enjoyed the benefits of the International Forestry Exhibition. The building in which much of that interest was concentrated, is now dismantled. But Forestry hopes to deepen a permanent interest in the topics it illustrated, as well as in others of special interest to landed proprietors and woodmen. After the playing of the Queen's anthem, and at the call of the large audience who had that day numbered over Sir James gibson-craig closed the International Forestry Exhibition of 1884, on the evening of the second Saturday of October, by a short speech. The financial results of the Exhibition, as they affect the guarantors, are not yet known. But whatever other direct consequences may supervene, over half a million visitors have been interested in forestry, while experts from nearly every country have compared ideas, and elicited new thoughts soon, we hope, to be made apparent either in manufactures or commerce. Without any invidious distinctions, we must refer to the assiduous courtesy of Mr. Cadell, the Secretary, who has filled a difficult position in an admirable way. Unlike some other reproductions of classic texts (1) We have not used OCR(Optical Character Recognition), as this leads to bad quality books with introduced typos. (2) In books where there are images such as portraits, maps, sketches etc We have endeavoured to keep the quality of these images, so they represent accurately the original artefact. Although occasionally there may be certain imperfections with these old texts, we feel they deserve to be made available for future generations to enjoy.

Process-based models open the way to useful predictions of the future growth rate of forests and provide a means of assessing the probable effects of variations in climate and management on forest productivity. As such they have the potential to overcome the limitations of conventional forest growth and yield models, which are based on mensuration data and assume that climate and atmospheric CO2 concentrations will be the same in the future as they are now. This book discusses the basic physiological processes that determine the growth of plants, the way they are affected by environmental factors and how we can improve processes that are well-understood such as growth from leaf to stand level and productivity. A theme that runs through the book is integration to show a clear relationship between photosynthesis, respiration, plant nutrient requirements, transpiration, water relations and other factors affecting plant growth that are often looked at separately. This integrated approach will provide the most comprehensive source for process-based modelling, which is valuable to ecologists, plant physiologists, forest planners and environmental scientists. Includes explanations of inherently mathematical models, aided by the use of graphs and diagrams illustrating causal interactions and by examples implemented as Excel spreadsheets Uses a process-based model as a framework for explaining the mechanisms underlying plant growth Integrated approach provides a clear and relatively simple treatment

Excerpt from Canadian Forestry Journal, 1914, Vol. 10 Dr. B. E. Fernow, dean of the Faculty of Forestry of Toronto University, in his report on the Trent watershed, showed the serious consequences which have followed the agricultural settlement of a district which, for the most part, was essentially non-agricultural in character. The soil having quickly become impoverished from cultivation, the people who remained on the poorer lands were existing under undesirable economic conditions. Repeated fires had destroyed a young growth having a potential stumpage value of millions of dollars, besides facilitating erosion and so changing the composition of the forest that its possible future value was greatly decreased.
