Excerpt from Foreign Quarterly Review, Vol. 8 Many of our readers are probably old enough to recollect the time when any adventurous person who had spoken gravely in company of Danish literature or Danish poet would have been looked upon as a literary Ferdinand Mendez into, who was endeavour ing, on the strength of having been beyond seas, to pass 01? The usual wonders of a traveller upon the public. Nay, it is not many years ago since a Frenchman, talking to a friend who had ventured to explore the savage regions of Germany, and naturally wishing to ac mre some knowledge of the habits of the natives, asked him, s Allemands, est-ce qu'ils out one langue Non, replied the other, ils Parlent seulement un patois; mais ils se compren nent entre cur. Now certain it is, that the Danes too, as well as the Germans, contrive to understand each other pretty well; and what, perhaps, is more to our purpose, they are now beginning to be understood by Europe also: the names of their fpoets, their novelists and historians, are becoming less strange, i not abso lately familiar to our ears; and Danish literature is fast assuming a respectable, if not an elevated position on the field of European culture. We have already, in a general article on the subject of Danish poetry, alluded to the works of some of its most distin guished ornaments; we now propose to consider a little more in detail the literary life of its greatest dramatic poet - Adam Oehlenschl'aiger. Excerpt from Foreign Quarterly Review, Vol. 7 The reign of Philip-Augustus belongs to two centuries, the twelfth and thirteenth, - centuries of no little importance in the history of European civilization. At a period like this, when events which have their origin in the progress, decay, and reproduction of past institutions are daily being developed, the study of the different steps by which the citizen has become what he is must be an occupation of the most lively interest. It is a remark of the author of the work before us, that we are apt to consider revolutions in a far too confined point of view; we limit the epoch by its visible signs and its finished results; but these results have been in long preparation. Society does not receive a new form in a day; the ideas cast abroad in one century become the leading principles of the next; in short, in the history of mankind everything is gradual; - a revolution is but the explosion of a train that has been long and curiously laid. The period in which Philip-Augustus was a great instrument in modelling and arranging the internal forms of society, is marked as the age in which the beginnings of numerous great changes had their commencement, - in which they arose into obvious existence, without, however, then receiving their accomplishment. It was the dawn of the great intellectual reformation, which has since made such rapid progress, and is every day more and more expanding its propitious light. The two grand elements which operated on society from the establishment of the barbarous invaders in Roman Gaul, and which maintained a continual struggle for predominance over the opinions of men from the seventh to the tenth century, were the material force of the conquerors, and the moral and intelligent force of the clergy. Excerpt from Foreign Quarterly Review, Vol. 2 Twenty-five years have nearly elapsed since the question which we are now going to examine was first laid bef01e the Bri tish public. Since that period, it has occasionally been brought into notice, or fallen into neglect, as the continental publi cations have made thei1 way to this island, or as the teachers of the system have thought fit to address themselves directly to Englishmen. The manner in which it was then received was not such as to authorize a belief that it eve1 could be treated but with contempt. Within a few yeais, however, it has attracted so large a share of attention, it has been contemplated with so much earnestness, with so much. Gravity - that we deem it a duty to allot some pages to its serious consideration. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. We onl remark, by way of practical inference, that there is not a litte here from which we moral church-going English might take a useful hint. If there were as much piety as there is church-going in our land, as much true Protestantism as there is a superstitious cry of No Popery, we should be an exemplary nation indeed!
