Excerpt from The Foreign Missionary: His Field and His Work This book embodies the results of about eighteen years of personal experience and observation in the foreign mission field, as well as of much missionary reading and thinking. The works to which the author has been most indebted are, "The Great Commission, or the Christian Church Constituted and Charged to convey the Gospel to the World," by Rev. John Harris, D. D., and "Foreign Missions, their Relations and Claims," by Rev. Rufus Anderson, D. D. The present stage of missionary progress, and the culture of the age, evidently require a more complete and scientific treatment of the missionary scheme, than that to be found in memoirs, or in sketches of particular fields, or in isolated addresses, sermons or appeals. The novelty and romance of missions have passed away. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. After 57 years of service involving Asia, Africa and Latin America, a veteran missionary is calling for a reformation in the way foreign missionary work is done. Bob Finley advocates the withdrawal of all American missionaries from foreign countries, and recommends supporting indigenous missions instead. He contends that there is no precedent formodern missions in the New Testament, no mention of apostles going to work in foreign countries, or anyone else being sent to serve where he did not know the local language. This book is a must read for pastors, missions committee members, professors of missions, and all other Christians who are interested in foreign missionary activities of American evangelicals.

Encounters from the Life of a Foreign Missionary Would I take a bullet for Christ? Was I willing to lay my life down for my beliefs? Those were questions to be answered by living most of those years in the politically unstable country of Colombia, which has a history of great violence. That was fifty years ago when I surrendered to be a missionary to Latin America in 1967. Since then, there have been many excerpts and encounters experienced. Throughout this book, I share many valuable lessons learned. I have discovered Gods delightful Providence as he continually guides my life. His protection has repeatedly kept me out of harms way. I have experienced his divine intervention while lying on a cold operating table. A doctors hand miraculously saved my life by hand-pumping my heart. I felt Gods protection as he took me out of harms way in Ecuador. I followed the leading of the Holy Spirit as he providentially directed me to a small orphaned group of baptized believers in Bolivia. He has provided ample provisions, protections, and promises. All of these have been excellent lessons learned. Thus, I build the bridge and write these pages for those who will follow.

'Mission is not the ultimate goal of the church. Worship is. Missions exist because worship doesn't. Worship is ultimate.' John Piper's contemporary classic draws on key biblical texts to demonstrate that worship is the ultimate goal of the church and that proper worship fuels missionary outreach. Piper offers a biblical defence of God's supremacy in all things, providing a sound theological foundation for missions. He examines whether Jesus is the only way to salvation and issues a passionate plea for God-centredness in the missionary enterprise, seeking to define the scope of the task and the means for reaching 'all nations'. Let the Nations Be Glad! is a trusted resource for missionaries, pastors, church leaders, youth workers, seminary students, and all who want to connect their labours to God's global purposes. This third edition has been revised and expanded throughout and includes new material on the 'prosperity gospel'.
