Breeding Sorghum for Diverse End Uses is a comprehensive overview of all significant global efforts for the genetic improvement of sorghum, a major crop of many semi-arid nations that is suitable for a huge range of uses, from human food, to biofuels. Split into two main sections, the book initially reviews the genetic suitability of sorghum for breeding, also providing the history of the genetic improvement of the grain. Finally, other sections look at specific breeding programs that could be improved in a number of areas, including human food, animal feed and industrial usage. Readers in academics, research, plant genetics and sorghum development will find this resource of great value. In addition, it is essential reading for engineers who utilize sorghum for food, feed and industrial materials in industry. - Provides information on key advances in the genetic makeup of sorghum - Allows plant breeders to apply this research to effectively breed new strains of sorghum that are dependent on final usage goals - Includes the latest findings in each section to orient researchers to plans for future genetic enhancement

Yield, quality and physical characteristics of sorghum forage are influenced by the stage of maturity of the plants at the time of harvest. Forage harvested in the boot stage is high in moisture content (78 to 88 percent) and leaf percentage and higher in protein than forage from later stages of maturity. Forage harvested in the dough stages in lower in moisture content and higher in grain percentage than forage from earlier stages. Maximum dry matter production is reached by most varieties and hybrids by the milk to soft-dough stages. Harvesting in immature stages (preboot and boot) reduced dry matter production as much as 40 to 50 percent. An extra cutting may be obtained wich early-maturing tyes harvested in immature stages but total production is still reduced. Harvesting in the milk to soft-dough stages is suggested from these results at least until feeding results are availability as a basis for more critical determination of the net value of harvested sorghum forages.

Sorghum crop provides the bulk of the animal feed in Sudan where the second largest animal wealth in Africa exists; yet attempts to develop improved types of forage sorghum were lacking or very few. This book presents the first endeavor in the Sudan to explore the potential of locally developed forage sorghum hybrids. Most of our present knowledge about combining ability in sorghum was based on studies carried in temperate environments with materials limited to photoperiod conversion program. In this work, local genetic stocks beside exotic ones were used under tropical conditions . The heterosis study revealed significant gains in forage yield over the existing maxima including the introduced commercial hybrid. Since the exotic material may transfer unwelcome traits to their progenies, the choice of local x local hybrids was recommended. Scientists and workers in hybrid seed industry may find this book interesting, as it introduces them to the potentialities of sorghum variability in Sudan.Students of genetics and plant breeding may also find this book informative, specifically in the area of heterosis and genetic analysis.

Global crop production must substantially increase to meet the needs of a rapidly growing population. This is constrained by the availability of nutrients, water, and land. There is also an urgent need to reduce the negative environmental impacts of crop production. Collectively, these issues represent one of the greatest challenges of the twenty-first century. Sustainable cropping systems based on ecological principles are the core of integrated approaches to solve this critical challenge. This special issue provides an international basis for revealing the underlying mechanisms of sustainable cropping systems to drive agronomic innovations. It includes review and original research articles that report novel scientific findings on improvement in cropping systems related to crop yields and their resistance to biotic and abiotic stressors, resource use efficiency, environmental impact, sustainability, and ecosystem services.
