Commercial aviation took shape in Hong Kong as the city developed into a powerful economy. Rather than accepting air travel as an inevitability in the era of global mobility, John Wong argues that Hong Kong’s development into a regional and global airline hub was not preordained. By underscoring the shifting process through which this hub emerged, Hong Kong Takes Flight aims to describe globalization and global networks in the making. Viewing the globalization of the city through the prism of its airline industry, Wong examines how policymakers and businesses asserted themselves against international partners and competitors in a bid to accrue socioeconomic benefits, negotiated their interests in Hong Kong’s economic success, and articulated their expressions of modernity.

Bringing together contributions from a group of prominent researchers, within a cognitive-linguistic framework, this volume sheds light on linguistic structures and usages characteristic of the Chinese language, including noun-verb inclusion, the conceptual spatialization of actions, existential constructions, conceptual structures and coherence, idioms and metaphors, language acquisition of caused motion, etc. The contributions are committed to the principle of “converging evidence” that has been advocated in Cognitive Linguistics since its inception. Some studies in this volume combine introspective methods with theoretical analysis, while others rely on corpus-based, experimental and neuroscientific methods. Featuring diverse topics and multiple methods, this collection will be useful to readers who are interested in the grammatical and conceptual structure of Chinese, as well as in the state-of-the-art of Cognitive Linguistics in China.

In 1956, as an excited, hopeful, 20 year old young man, I began a career in the feature animation department of Walt Disney Productions, now known as Walt Disney Feature Animation. At the time I just thought that anyone who could draw a little could work there, after all they hired me. I soon found that it took a great deal more talent and skill than just to be able to draw a little. After many years of working in the field as a special effects animator, with many established, successful old timers, I came to realize that my time and place was very special. I did learn to draw a lot and to be helpful in the process of making some very extraordinary motion pictures. I retired, January 2004, and have written my fun story, Flyin Chunks and Other Things to Duck, illustrating my struggles to continue in the field of animation, all the while managing to duck those flyin chunks which are always a part of every ones effort to live life. “Tantalizing, true stories of Indian women aviators who broke the glass ceiling and paved the way for future generations. ‘From Sarees to Stripes’ is a compelling read which establishes that it is no more a man’s world up there in the sky.” – Gunjan Saxena, former IAF officer and first female Indian combat pilot to serve in a war zone Straighten your seat, fasten your seatbelts, keep the tray table upright, and enjoy your flight! As you hear this announcement inside an aeroplane, how do you respond when it turns out that the captain/commander is a woman? Are you surprised, concerned or perhaps impressed? Women pilots have overcome extraordinary challenges to be where they are and their stories need to be told. ‘From Sarees to Stripes’ stems from experiences – both personal as well as those that numerous other women had, the challenges faced by them, and how they broke the glass ceiling every time. The stories of these women pilots weave together a narrative full of India’s aviation history, behind-the-scenes drama and the determination with which they fought all odds to realise their dreams. Starting from the mid-1930s to the millennials, the book covers the pioneers in this field. These women boast several firsts in the industry, one of which is being hired as pilots to fly for Indian Airlines, the airline that was the first to induct women as pilots as early as 1966, paving the way for many more.
