We have observed the first few W decays into electrons at the Tevatron, using the newly commissioned D0 detector. Preliminary results are presented. The number of observed decays as well as the transverse momentum of the electron, the neutrino and their transverse mass distributions, are consistent with expectations.

We report the results of a preliminary analysis of the W [r-arrow] e[nu] decays observed in 14 pb[sup [minus]1] of data taken during the Fermilab Tevatron Run l(a). After normalizing the mass scale to the Z mass measured at LEP, we find a value for the W mass of 79.86 [plus-minus] 0.16(stat) [plus-minus] 0.20(syst) [plus-minus] 0.31(scale) GeV. The method for extracting the W mass and the details of the error analysis are presented and discusses.

The D0 detector has been accumulating data at the Fermilab Tevatron at [radical]s = 1.8TeV for several months. In this paper we present the results of a preliminary analysis of W and Z vector boson decays into electrons based on 1.1pb[sup [minus]1] of data collected from Aug. 26, 1992 through Nov. 2, 1992. The event characteristics, as well as the number of events detected, are in good agreement with expectations.

This volume deals with the electroweak interactions at low and high energies. The results of the collider experiments are discussed, and the low energy experiments with complications for astrophysics are considered. Also, theoretical developments are presented to highlight the impact of forthcoming experiments and to find new directions of study.

Our current understanding of elementary particles and their interactions emerged from break-through experiments. This book presents these experiments, beginning with the discoveries of the neutron and positron, and following them through mesons, strange particles, antiparticles, and quarks and gluons. This second edition contains new chapters on the W and Z bosons, the top quark, B-meson mixing and CP violation, and neutrino oscillations. This book provides an insight into particle physics for researchers, advanced undergraduate and graduate students. Throughout the book, the fundamental equations required to understand the experiments are derived clearly and simply. Each chapter is accompanied by reprinted articles and a collection of problems with a broad range of difficulty.

CP violation is a well-established phenomenon in particle physics, but until 2001 it was only observed in kaons. In the last decade, several matter-antimatter asymmetries have been observed in neutral B mesons in line with the expectations of the Standard Model of the weak interaction. Direct CP violation is also expected in the decay rates of charged B+ mesons versus that of B- mesons, though the greatest effects are present in a decay that occurs just twice in 10 million decays. Such rarity requires huge samples to study and this is exactly what the LHC, and its dedicated B-physics experiment LHCb provide. This thesis presents an analysis of the first two years of LHCb data. The author describes the first observation of the rare decay, B- → DK-, D → π-K+ and the first observation of direct CP violation in this B decay. The work constitutes essential information on the experiment’s measurement of a fundamental parameter of the theory and stands as a benchmark against which subsequent analyses of this type will be compared.

I present the first measurement of the W boson mass in the electron decay channel using the Run II D0 detector at the Fermilab Tevatron Collider. The data used was collected from 2002 to 2006 and the integrated luminosity is 1 fb−1. The W boson mass was determined from the likelihood fit to the measured data distribution. The mass value is found to be 80.401 ± 0.023(stat) ± 0.037(syst) GeV = 80.401 ± 0.044 GeV using the transverse mass spectrum, which is the most precise measurement from one single experiment to date. This result puts tighter constraints on the mass of the standard model Higgs boson. I also present three other measurements that can help to reduce the theoretical uncertainties for the future W mass measurements.
