Excerpt from The Business Educator I have been asked by the Editors of the business educator to give another course of lessons in business writing. I have gladly consented to do so. At first I hesitated, fearing, perhaps, that the followers of such course might tire of the work given by the same person in the same paper during two consecutive years. Excerpt from Industrial Colonies and Village Settlements for the Consumptive Symonds, and we together examined the patients, sampled the climate and other conditions, and argued with Unger and Ruedi. Then for the second time came Hope; more solid Hope. Given a fairly early case, and three years, and recovery was in the offing. And so we went on cheerfully with Davos. But Davos was not for every one; nor was every case an early 'one. Then came the discovery that lower altitudes would do if certain conditions were obtained; and so arose the great sanatorium movement. But slowly we found that patients could not spend their lives in sanatoriums; and one day on making my way up to one of them in England, I met on the way patient after patient, slouching along, bored to death with themselves and with each other; and even worse in morale than in body. Better discipline and better notions of thera peutics mended some of that; still I could not forget those listless saunterers, and it became evident to some of us, however unwillingly, that Hope was drooping again. The sanatorium was doing a great educative work no doubt; but at the end of its four or six months - what then? To send the patient away with recommendations about light jobs, and a regime, was almost a mockery or quite. What about the wage, and the family to be supported? The next lesson was brought home to me by a visit with other commissioners to certain cities, concerning some such problems. Before me now I see a gaunt hollow-eyed man, coughing, and leaning against the wall as he tried to talk to us, saying that his mates when he came out of the sanatorium - good fellows as they were - had bought him a milk that he might creep round, and earn a bit. The brave wife, shawl on head and mill apron on, had just come from the factory, and apologised for the dirty house - as well she might. The poor thing was working all day at the factory to keep the wolf from the door. All being dragged down together into the pit! What is the value of a good house, or a clean house, if no wages! What is there for the children? And what is to stop the infection! Who then would have the imagination, the initiative, the business capacity, to lift this burden, like lifting a world? Excerpt from Business English This work grew out of teaching English to college men who were beginning their studies in Engineering. It seemed for various reasons desirable to give such students - along with their work in pure literature and technical English - some in struction in English as adapted to buying and selling, advertis ing and correspondence. There seemed however to be no text-book quite available for such a purpose. A purely elementary text-book, ignoring all high-school English and some of the grammar-school instruo tion, would not do. Nor could the need be supplied by some more advanced book devoted to the principles of correspond ence. What was needed was a book which took into considera tion the best standards and scholarship of college teaching, and applied the established principles of composition to the special problems of business, with due reference to the vocabularies of commerce and commercial law. From this point of view, then, the text of the book was writ ten. When finished, much of it was seen to be Within the grasp of younger students. It was then determined to simplify the text a little further, and to construct exercises which would make the book serviceable in the third and fourth year of tech nical and commercial high schools, in the first year of technical colleges, in business colleges, and in correspondence work. The manner in which this adjustment has been made may be seen at a glance in the exercises under Argument (p. Excerpt from The Literature of Business Of composition: an adequate vocabulary, a sense Of style, a respect for one's language, and a capacity to organize and marshal one's ideas? It is perfectly clear that no training can give all the information or produce all the qualities that are here suggested. But it is pretty evident that it is reading upon which we must depend for a very large part Of what we want. The way in which this reading should be done is not quite so evident. In the case Of college students, whose requirements have been primarily in the minds of the editors, two methods have been used: some instructors ask their students to subscribe for business magazines; others prepare lists of books and articles to which they send the students. Both methods are admirable, and they need not be discontinued even if a book Of selections is adopted. However, they suffer certain disadvantages. If all students read only one magazine of business, then the range Of reading is too narrow. If definite selections from various magazines and books are assigned, then large classes almost inevitably find difficulty in doing assigned reading promptly, if at all. If a wide range of choice is allowed, then it is not possible to check the reading fully, and the student's choice almost certainly depends upon his convenience rather than his needs. The rapid growth Of classes in business English makes necessary simplification Of teach ing methods. It is hoped that this book will contribute to such a simplification in connection with supplementary reading.
