Firestorms of Revival is the outgrowth of my doctoral work on historic moves of God, revival. In my research I discovered ten characteristics of revival that can be observed in twelve moves of God in the Old Testament, eight in the New Testament, and in five major post-biblical revivals. It's how revival always happened and will happen again. It is how revival fire will ignite across nations and the world. I have documented my research, included a major bibliography on revival, and chapters on the strategic nature of prayer and the Word of God, as well as inspiration to follow God's revival instructions. The appendices include tips on Prayer, help for breaking spiritual strongholds, a brief study on the nature of the Gospel-the message of the Church, and a considerable list of helpful biblical texts for spiritual growth and understanding. It is my hope and prayer that Firestorms of Revival will inspire you, the reader, to seek God for revival in our time. Dr. Bob Griffin and his wife Connie have served in ministry for over fifty years. Their first full time calling came after Bob graduated from Denver Seminary. “[A] master class in American cultural and intellectual history.” —Sarah E. Igo, The New York Times Book Review “Jackson Lears is the preeminent cultural historian of the American empire. This book is another masterpiece in his magisterial corpus.” —Cornel West One of Wired's best books of 2023 A master historian’s retrieval of the spiritual visions and vitalisms that animate American life and the possibilities they offer today. In Animal Spirits, the distinguished historian Jackson Lears explores an alternative American cultural history by tracking the thinkers who championed the individual’s spontaneous energies and the idea of a living universe against the strictures of conventional religion, business, and politics. From Puritan times to today, Lears traces ideas and fads such as hypnosis and faith healing from the pulpit and stock exchange to the streets and the betting table. We meet the great prophets of American vitality, from Walt Whitman and William James to Andrew Jackson Davis (the “Poughkeepsie Seer”) and the “New Thought” pioneer Helen Wilmans, who spoke of the “god within—rendering us diseaseless incarnations of the great I Am." Well before John Maynard Keynes stressed the reliance of capitalism on investors’ “animal spirits,” these vernacular vitalists established an American religion of embodied mind that also suited the needs of the marketplace. In the twentieth century, the vitalist impulse would be enlisted in projects of violent and racially charged national regeneration by Theodore Roosevelt and his legatees, even as African American writers confronted the paradoxes of primitivism and the 1960s counterculture imagined new ways of inspiriting the universe. Today, scientists are rediscovering the best features of the vitalist tradition—permitting us to reclaim the role of chance and spontaneity in the conduct of our lives and our understanding of the cosmos. Our nation used to look at violence, poverty, and gentrification and assign those problems to urban centers. Today, these issues concern the suburbs, too. The Christian community is responding to this reality. Churches and parachurch ministries are actively working to transform lives and restore communities throughout the city and suburbs. In A Heart for the Community: New Models for Urban and Suburban Ministry, you will be challenged by a collection of voices seeking community renewal. These individuals are involved in creative church planting initiatives, and they are serving the growing Hispanic and Muslim populations. Additional endeavors include serving racially changing communities, economic development strategies, and more. As anyone who has been in ministry for any length of time can attest, tackling some of the most challenging issues of our times is no mere academic exercise. The voices within these pages write from experience and offer workable, vibrant models of ministry that make a difference.

In this book, historian Nigel Scotland examines ten powerful revival movements that hugely impacted the social life and culture of large sections of America and the British Isles. Revivals represent a high point of Christian experience, renewing and empowering the life and worship of Christian communities. In consequence they draw large numbers of new people to personal faith in Christ, which in turn brings lasting and positive change to social life and culture. In this book special attention is given to the ways in which vibrant Christian faith challenged racism, fought and overcame slavery, helped to birth trade unions, campaigned for temperance, led to a rapid growth in education, from Sunday schools to universities, provided equal opportunities for women, and renewed family life and relationships.

In Christian history, no phenomenon is clearer than the recurrence of revivals. A passion for repentance sweeps across a city, and those who had been unaware of the supernatural are now keenly aware of God’s presence. Gripped by conviction of wrongdoing, they throw everything aside and desperately search for a way of salvation. Our spiritual instincts are often clouded by worthless pursuits, but God is working through His laws for the salvation of His people and for the world’s good. In Revival Now, learn about God’s laws of revival, including the laws of progress, spiritual growth, ebbing tide, fullness of time, awakening, variety, and more. Edited for today’s reader by Tom Phillips, Revival Now, originally written by James Burns in 1909 (Revivals, Their Laws and Leaders), traces common characteristics of past revivals, and shows how our world today is ripe for a new, profound move of God’s Spirit. Also included are inspirational prompts and prayers to help you experience Scripture and encounter Jesus. A Jesus awakening is here! DR. TOM PHILLIPS is a farm boy from Mississippi whose grandfather was a circuit-riding preacher. His family’s spiritual heritage originated in the great awakenings throughout the Southeast, beginning in Kentucky, in the early 1800s. Today Tom is vice president of the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association (BGEA). Tom and his wife, Ouida, have three grown children and make their home in Charlotte, North Carolina.

What is it going to take to revive the American church and usher in a spiritual awakening in the country? The author was trapped in a downtown hospital in New Orleans during Hurricane Katrina. From that experience, Jerry Bass believes that God allowed this disaster in order to wake up the church from its spiritual lethargy. This book was written with an overwhelming conviction that revival in the American church is needed. Endorsements "Reading Jerry's book brought about different emotions in me. My first emotion was painful memories of a very difficult time in my life living in a city that was destroyed by Hurricane Katrina. My second emotion was one of hope as Jerry called for revival in our city, state, and nation. Ladies and gentlemen WE NEED REVIVAL in America, and it MUST start in our churches!" Fred Luter, Jr., pastor, Franklin Avenue Baptist Church, New Orleans, Louisiana, president, Southern Baptist Convention "I've never seen the need for revival in the Church like I see it now. I pray for revival every day. I did not pray for revival before I read this book nor understand the difference between a revival and evangelization. I have also realized that 2 Chronicles 7:14 is directed to God's people (that includes me!) and not to unbelievers. I believe that many American Christians will be touched by God's Spirit as they read this book and glean from it that revival must start first with them." Bob Leaman, LSU Health/Director of Continuing Dental Education
