Excerpt from Fire Endurance of Steel Coated With Fire-Retardant Paint The functions of the National Bureau of Standards are set forth in the Act of Congress, March 3, 1901, as amended by Congress in Public Law 619, 1950. These include the develop ment and maintenance of the national standards of measurement and the provision of means and methods for making measurements consistent with these standards; the determination of physical constants and properties of materials; the development of methods and instruments for testing materials, devices, and structures; advisory services to government agencies on scientific and technical problems; invention and development of devices to serve special needs of the Government; and the development of standard practices, codes, and specifications. The work includes basic and applied research, development, engineering, instrumentation, testing, evaluation, calibration services, and various consultation and information services. Research projects are also performed for other government agencies when the work relates to and supple ments the basic program of the Bureau or when the Bureau's unique competence is required. The scope of activities is suggested by the listing of divisions and sections on the inside of the back cover. Excerpt from The Fireproofing of Steel Buildings The want of any systematized and collected form of in formation ou the subject of the development of the fireproofing of steel buildings and its present most approved and efficient methods of treatment', as recommended and used in the best practice of the day, has induced the author to offer this volume. It is hoped that it may rouse more general interest in a phase of building construction, the full importance of which, from an economic standpoint and from its close rela tion to the safety of human life, still largely remains to be realized in a practical and adequate way. The subject of fireproofing is still in the interesting stage of experimentation, and there is vast opportunity for practical ingenuity to make improvement and new suggestion. Indeed the term fireproof in relation to present imperfect conditions and environments is almost utopian. A building can, at best, be only relatively fire and water-proof. No structure can be considered as a unit, exclusive of its neighbor. But it may be assumed that a building designed and erected in accordance with the recommendations made in the following chapters, will be as nearly fireproof as the surrounding build ings and the character of the contents will permit. Excerpt from Iron, Steel, and Fire-Proof Construction: With Numerous Engravings and Diagrams In preparing for publication in book form the mass of relevant matter contained in the volumes of building world, much Of it necessarily had to be rearranged and-re-written. From this cause the writings of several contributors are blended, but it may be said that the greater part of the book consists of articles written by Mr. S. G. N. Mann. Excerpt from Effect of Zinc Coatings on the Endurance Properties of Steel The stresses applied to the acid pickled and the coated specimens were calculated on the diameter of the polished specimen before it was pickled or coated. The diameters were measured with a special micro meter capable of a precision of plus or minus inch. The change in diameter caused by either the acid treatment alone or the acid treatment and the application of the zinc coating was in all cases less than inch. The tensile strengths of the three materials were determined on standard inch diameter test bars, heat treated in the same way as the endurance specimens. Hardness determinations were made on the ends of the tensile and endurance test bars. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Structural design in fire conditions is conceptually similar to structural design in normal temperature conditions, but often more difficult because of internal forces induced by thermal expansion, strength reduction due to elevated temperatures, much larger deflections, and numerous other factors. Before making any design decisions it is esse
