Plastics to Energy: Fuel, Chemicals, and Sustainability Implications covers important trends in the science and technology of polymer recovery, such as the thermo-chemical treatment of plastics, the impact of environmental degradation on mechanical recycling, incineration and thermal unit design, and new options in biodegradable plastics. The book also introduces product development opportunities from waste materials and discusses the main processes and pathways of the conversion of polymeric materials to energy, fuel and chemicals. A particular focus is placed on industrial case studies and academic reviews, providing a practical emphasis that enables plastics practitioners involved in end-of-life aspects to employ these processes. Final sections examine lifecycle and cost analysis of different plastic waste management processes, exploring the potential of various techniques in modelling, optimization and simulation of waste management options. Introduces new pathways for the end-of-life treatment of plastics and polymers, including conversion to energy, fuel and other chemicals Compares different options to assist materials scientists, engineers and waste management practitioners to choose the most effective and sustainable option Covers the latest trends in the science and technology of polymer energy recovery

This project examines the City of New Orleans' waste tire problem. Louisiana State law, as of January 1, 1991, prohibits the knowing disposal of whole waste tires in landfills. Presently, the numerous waste tire stockpiles in New Orleans range in size from tens to hundreds of tires. New Orleans' waste tire problem will continue to increase until legal disposal facilities are made accessible and a waste tire tracking and regulatory system with enforcement provisions is in place. Tires purchased outside of the city of New Orleans may be discarded within the city's limits; therefore, as a practical matter this study analyzes the impact stemming from the entire New Orleans metropolitan area. Pyrolysis mass recovery (PMR), a tire reclamation process which produces gas, oil, carbon black and steel, is the primary focus of this report. The technical, legal and environmental aspects of various alternative technologies are examined. The feasibility of locating a hypothetical PMR operation within the city of New Orleans is analyzed based on the current economic, regulatory, and environmental climate in Louisiana. A thorough analysis of active, abandoned, and proposed Pyrolysis operations (both national and international) was conducted as part of this project. Siting a PMR plant in New Orleans at the present time is technically feasible and could solve the city's waste tire problem. Pending state legislation could improve the city's ability to guarantee a long term supply of waste tires to any large scale tire reclamation or recycling operation, but the local market for PMR end products is undefined.

"Scrap tire is considered to be one of the very common and significant solid wastes and its production is increasing due to the increased number of vehicles in both developed and developing countries. Initiatives are being taken to overcome the fossil fuel crisis by looking for alternatives to replace gasoline and diesel fuel. This work presents the simulation of waste tires pyrolysis process in ASPEN PlusĀ® 8.4 where the effect of temperature on the pyrolytic oil yield was investigated. It is shown that the optimum temperature for waste tire pyrolysis in a rotary kiln reactor is around 450-550oC. Also, an exergetic analysis of the pyrolysis reactor was performed to study the performance of the process. The overall exergetic efficiency of the reactor was found to be 69.9% which is equivalent to an exergy destruction of 30.1% due to process irreversibility. Finally, life cycle assessment of the process using SimaPro 7.3.2 was conducted to find out if the process of waste tire pyrolysis is environmentally friendly. The results showed that the pyrolysis process can be considered environmentally friendly but there is room for improvement. A sensitivity analysis was conducted to investigate the effect of changing the heating fuel in the process where non-condensable gases produced in the process were utilized for heating purposes. The results showed a significant reduction on the environmental impacts due to the reduction of hazardous emissions from the process."--Abstract.
