Polymer Processing Instabilities: Control and Understanding offers a practical understanding of the various flows that occur during the processing of polymer melts. The book pays particular attention to flow instabilities that affect the rate of production and the methods used to prevent and eliminate flow instabilities in order to increase product

Develops the sustained, relational, dynamic, and reflective attention demanded by Gertrude Steins novel into a theory of reading and critical analysis. Arguing that Gertrude Steins monumental novel The Making of Americans models a radically aesthetic relation to the world, E. L. McCallum demonstrates how the novel teaches us to read differently, unmaking our habits of reading. Each of the chapters works through close readings of Steins text and a philosophical interlocutor to track a series of theoretical questions: what forms queer time, what are the limits of story, how do we feel emotion, how can we agree on a shared reality if interpretation and imagination intervene, and how do particular media shape how we convey this rich experience? The formally innovative agenda and epistemological drive of Steins novel stages rich thought experiments that bear on questions that are central to some of the most vibrant conversations in literary studies today. In the midst of ongoing debates about the practices of reading, the difficulty of reading, and even the impossibility of reading, the moment has come to have a fuller critical engagement with this landmark novel. This book shows how.

Determination of the spontaneous oscillations of a wing or tail unit entail many difficulties, both the mathematical determination and the determination by static wing oscillation tests being far from successful and flight tests involving very great risks. The present paper gives a method developed at the Junkers Airplane Company by which the critical velocity with respect to spontaneous oscillations of increasing amplitude can be ascertained in flight tests without undue risks, the oscillation of the surface being obtained in the tests by the application of an external force.

This book presents a comprehensive description of the physics of free-electron lasers starting from the fundamentals and proceeding through detailed derivations of the equations describing electron trajectories, and spontaneous and stimulated emission. Linear and nonlinear analyses are described, as are detailed explanations of the nonlinear simulation of a variety of configurations including amplifiers, oscillators, self-amplified spontaneous emission, high-gain harmonic generation, and optical klystrons. Theory and simulation are anchored using comprehensive comparisons with a wide variety of experiments.

Continuing the themes that have been addressed in The Humanities in Architectural Design and The Cultural Role of Architecture, this book illustrates the important role that a contradiction between form and function plays in compositional strategies in architecture. The contradiction between form and function is seen as a device for poetic expression, for the expression of ideas, in architecture. Here the role of the terms "form" and "function" are analyzed throughout the history of architecture and architectural theory, from Vitruvius to the present, with particular emphasis on twentieth-century functionalism. Historical examples are given from Ancient, Classical, Islamic, Christian, Byzantine, Gothic, Renaissance, Mannerist, and Neoclassical architecture, and from movements in the twentieth century to the present. In addition philosophical issues such as lineamenti, Vorstellung, différance, dream construction, deep structure and surface structure, topology theory, self-generation, and immanence are explored in relation to the compositions and writings of architects throughout history. This book contributes to the project of re-establishing architecture as a humanistic discipline, to re-establish an emphasis on the expression of ideas, and on the ethical role of architecture to engage the intellect of the observer and to represent human identity.

This book provides an introduction to nanofluidics in a simple manner and can be easily followed by senior undergraduate students, graduate students, and other researchers who have some background in fluid mechanics. The book covers the main topics about the fundamentals of nanofluidics and how it differs from classic fluid mechanics. It also describes the methodologies of nanofluidics, including numerical approaches, e.g., molecular dynamics simulation and experimental techniques. Fundamental physics and new phenomena in nanofluidics are the major concerns of this book. The author goes on to discuss nanocofinements and the parameters that affect the fluid dynamics at the nanoscale and make flow analysis complex. These parameters accommodate rich, new flow phenomena that may not be observed at the macro- and microscale. Although not all of the new phenomena will find widespread applications, the physics underlying these new phenomena may offer insights for other fields. This is one of the reasons why this book emphasizes the mechanisms of various flow fashions. Explores the unique characteristics of nanoscale flows and related properties Reviews the latest research of nanoscale ion transport and its applications Discusses the fluid flows in nanoconfinements in a unique manner based on the author's original research Incorporates important applications of nanofluidics throughout.
