SHERMAN'S FRIENDLY REMONSTRANCE THE great Civil War was at an end The moral sense and political judgment of the North were vindicated, as far as war could vindicate them. There were days of great rejoicing and celebration in all the Northern cities. In the section of the country which had been in revolt the soldiers in gray pluckily took up the burden of life again, and the difficult work of political reconstruction began. "Sept. 13. To-day I have sent to the publisher a revised copy of the Red Book of Appin, to which I have added the interpretations of Palmerin, for a new edition. It is my wish also to publish something in exposition of the Arabian Nights Tales, in which, generally, the Love of which so much is said is the mystic love of Nature figured as a Lady, usually a princess. In the gospel it is represented by the Magi following the star (Conscience). "Washington, Oct. 9. Published another letter in the Chronicle this morning on the subject of exchanges. I am not eulogizing Mr. Stanton, but am stating some facts as an act of justice." After the war the great Secretary was bitterly and fiercely attacked in the press and charged with refusing to exchange prisoners and thereby wantonly protracting the sufferings of our soldiers in Andersonville and Libby. General Hitchcock Vigorous Defence of Stanton 479 vigorously defended him in a series of carefully...

“An important book that rescues George B. McClellan’s military reputation.” —Chronicles Bold, brash, and full of ambition, George Brinton McClellan seemed destined for greatness when he assumed command of all the Union armies before he was 35. It was not to be. Ultimately deemed a failure on the battlefield by Abraham Lincoln, he was finally dismissed from command following the bloody battle of Antietam. To better understand this fascinating, however flawed, character, Ethan S. Rafuse considers the broad and complicated political climate of the earlier 19th Century. Rather than blaming McClellan for the Union’s military losses, Rafuse attempts to understand his political thinking as it affected his wartime strategy. As a result, Rafuse sheds light not only on McClellan’s conduct on the battlefields of 1861-62 but also on United States politics and culture in the years leading up to the Civil War. “Any historian seriously interested in the period will come away from the book with useful material and a better understanding of George B. McClellan.” —Journal of Southern History “Exhaustively researched and lucidly written, Rafuse has done an excellent job in giving us a different perspective on ‘Little Mac.’” —Civil War History “Rafuse’s thoughtful study of Little Mac shows just how enthralling this complex and flawed individual continues to be.” —Blue & Gray magazine

On May 14, 1846, the U.S. Congress declared that the country was at war with Mexico. Despite protestations to the contrary, the primary purpose of U.S. President James K. Polk in executing the war was the acquisition of California. In 1847, Nicholas P. Trist was sent on a diplomatic mission to deliver Polk's peace terms to the Mexican president, Santa Ana. Angered by the Mexican government's rejection of his terms, Polk issued a recall order in November which Trist chose to ignore. He eventually negotiated a settlement on February 2, 1848, that contained nearly everything that Polk had hoped for. This diplomatic history of America's first foreign war focuses on Trist's efforts and the policies of the Polk administration.
