Before returning to the United Kingdom in 1972, I was in Uganda for 16 years, most of which time was spent as Chief Warden of Murchison Falls National Park. Our main problem was that an over-population of large mammals was having a devastating impact on the habitat. Devas tation was being wrought on woodland areas by the arrival of large numbers of elephants into the sanctuary of the Park, following changes in land use in the areas outside the Park. These changes were in response to the requirements of an ever-expanding human population.

In 1874, Tom Parmer published Fifty-Five Years Ago in the Wilderness, or The Old Ringtail Panther of Missouri to record and preserve his father's adventures for posterity. Martin Parmer was the quintessential eccentric American frontiersman, Indian fighter, Indian agent, and citizen legislator. This booklet provides short but fascinating biographical sketches about Martin Parmer before he immigrated to Texas in 1825 where he would become an active participant in the Texas Revolution. As no complete copy of the original booklet could be located, an effort was undertaken to preserve Tom Parmer's entertaining work. Using fragments of Tom Parmer's original booklet located in various archives and private collections around Texas, Kameron K. Searle was able to compile the complete text of Tom Parmer's original booklet in this restored edition.
