This book assesses the potential effects of biotechnological approaches, particularly genetic modification, on the present state of fiber crop cultivation and sustainable production. Leading international researchers discuss and explain how biotechnology can affect and solve problems in connection with fiber crops. The topics covered include biology, biotechnology, genomics and applications of fiber crops like cotton, flax, jute and bamboo. Providing complete, comprehensive and broad subject-based reviews, the book offers a valuable resource for students, teachers, and researchers including agriculturists, biotechnologists and botanists, as well as industrialists and government agencies involved in the planning of fiber crop cultivation.

Vegetable fibers play an important role in domestic use and fiber industry for different purposes such as ropes, chords, twines, binders, gunny bags, carpets etc. Long vegetable fibers include both bast fibers obtained the bark of the stem and the fibers obtained from leaves. Among the bast fibers are utee, kenaf, ramie, flax, Hibiscus spp. and leaf fibers such as Agave sp. The present gives a detailed account of important bast fibers of world with respect to utility, botany, development of fibers, anatomy, methods of extraction, quality. There exist large variations among bast fibers in anatomical structures among different bass fibers crops and among varieties of the same species. In the case of ramie and flax fibers cells, oval are arranged in isolated manner or in patches in the cortex. The bast fibers are extracted by retting process caused by bacterial actions while in the case of ramie being cellulosic the fibers are extracted by chemical degumming process. The book deals with distribution, anatomy, extraction methods of few Mexican laef fibres such as Agave lecheguilla, yucca carnersana exploited extensively in arid lands of Nrteast Mexico. In the last part of the book is given a concise review on the technology of the fibers and its quality. The book will be useful in fiber industry and serve as text book in agriculture.

Divided into four sections covering anatomy in relation to crop management, anatomical descriptions of the major crop plants, anatomical changes in adaptation to environments and the link between anatomy and productivity, this book provides a comprehensive source of crop plant anatomy information. The crop areas covered include cereals, pulses and beans, oil crops and fibre crops. Suitable for students, researchers and professionals in the field, this book brings together economic plant anatomy and crop productivity for the first time. It is suitable for students and researchers of crop scienc.

Hemp as a Modern U.S. Commodity Crop provides an overview of industrial hemp as an agronomic crop in western cropping systems. Emphasis is given to the long history of hemp, mostly in the United States, and to current production issues pertinent in the US as well as Europe and Canada. There are many questions still to be answered starting with those to be addressed by the most basic classical plant breeding techniques and continuing to the most modern analytical techniques of plant tissues and genetics.

This book provides a systematic overview of the recent developments in the production and processing of jute and allied fibres, giving insight into ways to improve their productivity in order to keep pace with the growing needs of an increasing population. The book will be particularly beneficial to agronomists, soil scientists, pathologists, biotechnologists, seed production specialists, market managers, industrialists, development agencies, graduate and postgraduate students, and other stakeholders associated with jute and allied fibre crop improvement, or market development in the public and private sectors. The book may also help to generate ideas surrounding the formulation of public-private collaborative research for future innovations regarding this crop.

This book captures how industrial crops can be used in conventional agriculture and greener biopharming for pharmaceutical industries. Pharmaceuticals and industrial compounds are studied from the perspective of their co-existence with plant resources and byproducts. Such plant-based industrial products rely on scientific and technological breakthroughs and provide new opportunities for the agricultural sector, at the same time mitigate the risks associated with climate change. The management of the externalities and of the possible unintended economic effects that arise in this context is critical and poses difficult questions for regulators. The book also provides a review of the emerging agro-industrial biomass technology involved in conversion of most of the solid transgenic industrial crops by products such as plant oil lignocellulosic materials into liquid biobased energy-fuels. The book covers how innovative biotechnology can expand the markets for agricultural producers worldwide, reduce environmental degradation, and provide alternatives to fossil carbon-derived products and energy. Aspects of entrepreneurial biotechnology and bioprospecting are also covered.
