Funding for the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) Alkali-Silica Reactivity (ASR) Development and Deployment Program was provided under SAFETEA-LU. A related Conference Report provides additional guidance stating that “project and programs related to ASR should…assist states in inventorying existing structures for ASR.” Throughout the program, the FHWA has been leading a national effort to further the development and deployment of techniques which can prevent and mitigate ASR.

Throughout the program, the FHWA has been leading a national effort to further the development and deployment of techniques which can prevent and mitigate ASR. In closing of the ASR Development and Deployment Program, workshops are being delivered to effectively transfer the deliverables of the Program and provide State Department of Transportation (DOT) engineers and practitioners with the information and tools necessary to address ASR in their states. This document serves as the Reference Guide for the FHWA workshops on Alkali-Aggregate Reactivity (AAR)."--Page 3.

Handbook for the Identification of Alkali-silica Reactivity in Highway Structures

Handbook for the Identification of Alkali-silica Reactivity in Highway Structures

This handbook is designed to help highway engineers and bridge inspectors spot and fix this very damaging and difficult-to-detect problem, namely, alkali-silica reactivity (ASR). The 49-page handbook provides for the field identification of ASR in portland cement concrete structures, such as highway pavements and bridges. ASR occurs when silica or silicates in aggregates react with alkali in the cement to form a gel-like substance which absorbs water and eventually cracks the concrete. Some areas of the country are more susceptible to this than others. Accurate detection of ASR is the key to choosing the best rehabilitation strategy. The proper diagnosis and assessment of the problem is covered.

New Hampshire's Concrete Aggregate and Alkali-silica Reactivity

Alkali-silica reactivity (ASR) has become a major concern with regards to long-term durability of concrete structures in New Hampshire. The objectives of this research were the following: determine the potential for the development of ASR in concrete using fine and coarse aggregates in New Hampshire; confirm the presence and extent of ASR in existing NHDOT concrete structures; identify the types of rocks in New Hampshire that are potentially reactive; and evaluate the need for an additional study to determine the amount of admixtures required for the minimization of ASR in new concrete within New Hampshire.
