The purpose of the Atmospheric Density Specification (ADS) mission (AFGL-705) is to generate a coordinated and comprehensive global set of lower thermospheric state variables (density, temperature, and wind) in the altitude range 100 - 300 kilometers. This data set will be analyzed by a team of scientists including experimentalists and theoreticians to improve the performance of the density specification models of this region of the atmosphere, which currently provide density predictions to a typical accuracy of approx. 15 percent. The instrument complement of the proposed mission includes an ion/neutral mass spectrometer capable of determining absolute neutral densities to approx. 5 percent, an electrostatic triaxial accelerometer for satellite drag and cross-track wind determination, a Fabry-Perot interferometer for the determination of altitude profiles of vector winds, temperatures and composition, and an ion mass spectrometer capable of determining neutral winds and ion neutral constituent abundances.

This book is an introduction to the use of the ultraviolet for remote sensing of the Earth's atmosphere. It covers the Earth's UV radiative environment, experimental techniques, and current applications. it is my intention to provide the information needed to "make a first approximation" concerning the use of the ultraviolet and to provide access through the literature for a more thorough study. * Contains recent UV applications not previously available in book form such as ozone, auroral images, and ionospheric sensing * Features broad coverage of fundamentals of atmospheric geophysics with values for fluxes, cross-sections, and radiances * Covers techniques that illustrate principles of measurements with typical values * Contains numerous references to original literature

Atmospheric densities are computed from analysis of Doppler beacon satellite data. Modifications to Doppler beacon data processing program CELEST necessary for this study are described. Results obtained for satellites DB-7(6382), DB-8(6727), and DB-9(6928) are found to be in good agreement with those obtained by analysis of skin track data for the same satellites using program CADNIP. A knowledge of atmospheric density and its variation at satellite altitudes is needed for operational support of several military activities. Atmospheric density data computed from the decay rates of more than 40 satellites orbited during a five-year period were analyzed during this investigation. Multiple regression equations were derived to specify the density at 10-km intervals at altitudes from 180 to 300 km as a function of solar activity, time of day, time of year, and combinations of these variables. Density values depicted by these regression equations were then compared with density data which had not been used during the derivation of the equations. The results of this investigation indicate that multiple regression analysis and the associated screening procedure can produce equations from which computed density values are in close agreement with observed density data. The results lead to a conclusion that no single density model can meet all needs. These results also indicate that characteristics of a density model should be selected to fit the purpose for which the model is intended. Four possible density models designed for different purposes are suggested. (Author).
