Every indulgence of a depraved ap petite, every ac't of obedience to the fuggef tions of evil inclinations, is'a contempt of His law, and flying in the face of His authority. He hath commanded us to keep ourfelves from pollution, to free ourfelves from fin: How then fhall we continue in fin, and yet ferve Him? Is it in our power to change the nature of things? Excerpt from Forty Family Sermons These considerations will perhaps lead the reader to account for, if not to justify, the usual plan of the following discourses. That they are brief, and are attempted to be simple, and easily intelligible, and seldom or never controversial, needs no apology. That they should be chiefly elementary, embracing the lead ing points of Christian doctrine and practice, is what the writer wished, at least, to attain. That they are too calm, too little conversant with the striking illustrations and never-forgotten words which are sometimes heard in the pulpit, is partly the writer's defect, but it is also partly incidental; for a sermon written errpressly to be read in families - perhaps often by a son or daughter, the whole audience being only the parents, children, and servants - would be wholly unsuitable if composed in a style very proper for the pulpit. Denunciations must often becorns persuasions; fervent appeals to various classes of character must often become rather Scriptural statements respecting such classes of character, since either the originals may not be present, or, if present, the application might be improperly personal; the pas toral authoritative you, must sink into the modest we; and the whole assume the air of simple discussion, afl'ectionate advice, gentle persuasion, and plain Scrip tural instruction, rather than those elevated features which the family reader could not with propriety adopt, so as to make the sermon his own. This would be no excuse for want of faithfulness or earnestness, but it greatly modifies the style of conveying Scriptural truth. Excerpt from Ninety Short Sermons for Family Reading, Vol. 2 of 2: Following the Course of the Christian Seasons With exultation. Does He love that sheep more than the other ninety and nine which never went astray? Not so, indeed. Be sure that He loves best those which have followed Him faithfully, nor ever sought to leave His side. But He rejoices most over the sheep which He had at one time feared to lose - Such is the outline of the parable. Excerpt from Sermons for Christian Families, on the Most Important Relative Duties Christ. The few sermons in this selection, which are of a less specific character, will nevertheless be found to have an important bearing on the principal design of the publica tion. Christian fathers, the members of mater nal associations, all pious mothers indeed, will find it a welcome companion, a faithful monitor and friend. That such a work is greatly needed, there is but too much evidence in'the prevail ing laxity of family government and discipline. That it may be instrumental of reviving fam ily religion, - of turning the heart of the fathers unto the children, and the heart of chil dren unto their fathers, and thus of averting. Excerpt from Practical Sermons: To Be Read in Families and Social Meetings Several years have elapsed since the author promised to a few friends, that, if life and health should be continued, he would endeavour to prepare a volume of sermons on practical subjects, to be circulated by the Presbyterian Board of Publication. Incessant occupation in professional duties, occasioned the postponement of the fulfilment of this promise from time to time; until recently, when he was informed that the Board of Publication were desirous to put such a volume into circulation; especially for the benefit of families who were deprived of the opportunity of attending on the preaching of the gospel. At first it occurred to him, that for the purposes of the Board, such a volume had better be composed of a collection of sermons contributed by different ministers of our church. But upon reflection, he was persuaded that it would be found difficult to get the proper persons to furnish discourses on the topics which might be prescribed. And he has observed, that when the sermons of several persons are included in the same volume, there is a disposition in many readers to make invidious comparisons between the authors; and while some discourses are highly valued, others are neglected. Upon the whole, it seems best that every author should make his own book; and to obtain a desirable variety, more volumes of sermons than one should be put into circulation. The author being aware that books of sermons are not in as much demand as publications of another kind, would not have consented that the Board of Publication should run the risk of an edition of this volume; but this objection was obviated by the generous proposal of the friends referred to above, to bear the whole expense of stereotyping the work.
