Excerpt from More Faith Cures: Or Answers to Prayer in the Healing of the Sick Many testimonies were given substantially like this. The words of one, I must praise the Lord for His unspeakable blessing -to me. He has healed me entirely in body, filled me with His spirit, and made me happy as happy can be all the day long. I found also that the gifts of healing are given to several in London, in greater or less measure; and many have been healed through their prayers, with the laying on of hands and anointing in the name of the Lord. This new edition places Sarah Mix (1832-1884) in the context of American religious history, and shows her influence on the emerging faith healing movement and other female healing evangelists, including Carrie Judd Montgomery and Maria Woodworth-Etter. The divine healing movement, also known as faith healing or faith cure was a significant phenomenon in American religion and culture in the late nineteenth century. More importantly, during this period of the divine healing movement, women occupied a central role as practitioners. Both the religious and secular press reported her ministry, which was so successful that physicians referred patients to her. In 1882 Sarah Mix published Faith Cures, and Answers to Prayer, which includes an account of her own healing of tuberculosis by a Methodist minister, letters of testimony from individuals who experienced her gift of healing, and press notices.

This new edition expands and updates the only general interpretation of the rise and influence of perfectionist revivalism in America and Europe. Fifteen years of expanding research on the holiness movement reinforce this volume's continuing seminal value to cultural and social research. The new concluding essay describes the history of the revival through the turn of the century. This book expands our understanding of the fragmentation and coalescence of American religion by analyzing the factors which created numerous new holiness denominations. Dieter also outlines the historical and theological factors that separate this largely Wesleyan and Methodist wing of evangelicalism from the fundamentalism of Reformed evangelicals. The identification of such nuances will prove especially helpful to those struggling with the extreme diversity in American religion, especially in evangelicalism. For students and scholars of American religious movements as well as students of the feminist, temperance, abolitionist, and populist movements in American society.
