Telemedicine, the practice of transferring medical data using interactive audio, visual and data communication systems, is fast becoming indispensable in modern medicine, healthcare and education. This volume reviews the rapidly expanding and changing field of telemedicine in general with a special focus on teledermatology. As well as presenting historical and technological aspects, the book also describes several of the many fields of application in detail - one of them being teleteaching which already forms an essential part of medical training. Another major issue in telemedicine is the discussion of legal and ethical aspects of teleconsulting. Further contributions acquaint the reader with the various possibilities of telemedicine such as telemedicine for the family doctor, teleradiology, applications in surgery, telepathology, telecardiology, telemedicine in oncology and ophthalmology, and telepsychiatry. The particular aspects of teledermatology are discussed in detail in a separate section. All healthcare professionals from the medical practitioner to the pharmacist, healthcare manager, nurse or technician will find this compilation of up-to-date data valuable reading. The detailed discussion of teledermatology makes it indispensable for the dermatologist.

Thanks to remarkable advances in modern health care attributable to science, engineering, and medicine, it is now possible to cure or manage illnesses that were long deemed untreatable. At the same time, however, the United States is facing the vexing challenge of a seemingly uncontrolled rise in the cost of health care. Total medical expenditures are rapidly approaching 20 percent of the gross domestic product and are crowding out other priorities of national importance. The use of increasingly expensive prescription drugs is a significant part of this problem, making the cost of biopharmaceuticals a serious national concern with broad political implications. Especially with the highly visible and very large price increases for prescription drugs that have occurred in recent years, finding a way to make prescription medicinesâ€"and health care at largeâ€"more affordable for everyone has become a socioeconomic imperative. Affordability is a complex function of factors, including not just the prices of the drugs themselves, but also the details of an individual's insurance coverage and the number of medical conditions that an individual or family confronts. Therefore, any solution to the affordability issue will require considering all of these factors together. The current high and increasing costs of prescription drugsâ€"coupled with the broader trends in overall health care costsâ€"is unsustainable to society as a whole. Making Medicines Affordable examines patient access to affordable and effective therapies, with emphasis on drug pricing, inflation in the cost of drugs, and insurance design. This report explores structural and policy factors influencing drug pricing, drug access programs, the emerging role of comparative effectiveness assessments in payment policies, changing finances of medical practice with regard to drug costs and reimbursement, and measures to prevent drug shortages and foster continued innovation in drug development. It makes recommendations for policy actions that could address drug price trends, improve patient access to affordable and effective treatments, and encourage innovations that address significant needs in health care.

Hepatic hydatidosis is a worldwide disease with a high socio-economic cost in endemic areas. Until recently, only professionals working in these areas treated hydatidosis patients, but now, due to migration and increasing intercontinental travel, any medical doctor may have to attend to patients with hydatid disease. Therefore, proper training in the diagnosis and treatment of these patients is necessary, not just in endemic areas which already have extensive experience in managing the disease, but also in institutions in countries like the United States where hydatidosis is still rare. In this book, we update all the epidemiological, radiological, clinical and therapeutic topics in liver hydatidosis. The chapters are written by a multidisciplinary group of physicians involved in treatment of the disease: microbiologists, gastroenterologists, internists, radiologists and surgeons. We conduct a complete review of all the treatment options in hydatidosis, including antiparasitic drugs, PAIR and surgery.

This book offers the first extended study published in English on the Hippocratic treatise On Regimen, one of the most important pre-Platonic documents of the discussion of human nature and other topics at the intersection of ancient medicine and philosophy. It is not only a unique example of classical Greek dietetic literature, including the most elaborated account of the micro-macrocosm and phusis-technē analogies, but it also provides the most explicit discussion of the soul-body opposition preceding Plato. Moreover, Bartoš argues, it is a rare example of an extant medical text which systematically draws on philosophical authorities, such as Heraclitus, Empedocles and Anaxagoras, and which had a decisive influence on both physicians, such as Galen, and philosophers, most notably Plato and Aristotle.
