Britain's Fabian Society was founded in 1884 to promote non-Marxist evolutionary socialism, and later laid the foundations for the nation's Labour Party. These educational essays, adapted from a series of lectures delivered in 1889 and published the following year, serve not only as an introductory course in democratic applications of socialism but also as a primer in the history of modern British politics. Essays include. . George Bernard Shaw on the economic basis of socialism, and transitioning to social democracy . Sidney Webb on the history of socialism in England . William Clarke on the capitalist roots of socialism . Sydney Oliver on morality and socialism . Graham Wallas on property, wealth, and debt under socialism . Annie Besant on the workings of industry in a socialist system . Hubert Bland on the future of modern socialism.

Excerpt from Fabian Essays in Socialism N O doubt this general statement shews the Revolutionaries of 1848 - 71 as simpler than they appear on their own records. Proudhon was full of proposals: one Of them, the minimum wage, turns out to be of the very first importance now that Mr. And Mrs. Sidney Webb have put the case for it on an invincible basis Of industrial fact and economic theory. Lassalle really knew something Of the nature of law, the practice of Government, and the mind of the governing classes. Marx, though cer tainly a bit of a Liberal fatalist (did he not say that force is the midwife of progress without reminding us that force is equally the midwife Of chaos, and chaos the midwife Of martial law P), was at all events no believer in Laisser-faire. Socialism involves the introduction Of design, contrivance, and co-ordination, by a nation consciously seeking its own collective welfare, into the present industrial scramble for private gain; and as it is clear that this cannot be a spontaneous result of a violent overthrow Of the existing order, and as the Socialists of 1848 - 71 were not blind, it would be impossible to substantiate a claim for Fabian Essays as the first text-book of Socialism in which catastrophism is repudiated as a method of Socialism. A Sunday Times Best Book of the Year: The “informative and entertaining” first major biography of the trailblazing, controversial children’s author (The Washington Post). Born in 1858, Edith Nesbit is today considered the first modern writer for children and the inventor of the children’s adventure story. In The Life and Loves of E. Nesbit, award-winning biographer Eleanor Fitzsimons uncovers the little-known details of her life, introducing readers to the Fabian Society cofounder and fabulous socialite who hosted legendary parties and had admirers by the dozen, including George Bernard Shaw. Through Nesbit’s letters and archival research, Fitzsimons reveals “E.” to have been a prolific lecturer and writer on socialism and shows how Nesbit incorporated these ideas into her writing, thereby influencing a generation of children—an aspect of her literary legacy never before examined. Fitzsimons’s riveting biography brings new light to the life and works of this remarkable writer and woman. “Meticulous and invaluable...exceptionally illuminating and detailed.” —The Wall Street Journal “Fitzsimons handily reassembles the hundreds of intricate, idiosyncratic parts of the miraculous E. Nesbit machine.” —The New York Times Book Review “I’ve always loved the work of E. Nesbit—The Railway Children and Five Children and It are my favorites—but I knew nothing about the extraordinary, surprising life of this great figure in children’s literature . . . so gripping that I read [it] in two days.” —Gretchen Rubin, #1 New York Times-bestsellingauthor of The Happiness Project “A charming, lively, and old-fashioned biography . . . highly readable.” —Publishers Weekly “A terrific book.” —Neil Gaiman
