Excerpt from First Annual Report of the Board of Managers of the Delaware, Lackawanna and Western Rail-Road Co. To the Stockholders: January 1854 The Charter for the Ligget's Gap rail-road, embracing that portion of the Company's present line extending from the Lackawanna Coal Basin, at Scranton, to its junction with the new-york and Erie Road, at Great Bend, had been obtained; and the Company was organized, (the capital hav ing been mainly subscribed by a few of the present Stock holders, ) in the winter of 1850. The construction of the road was commenced the follow ing Spring, under the immediate supervision of Col. George W. Scranton, who, for that purpose, was appointed General Agent of the Company, and on October 2oth, 1851, it was so far completed as to be Open for traffic.
