This volume focuses on multilateralism in the 21st century and examines how, and how effectively, the EU delivers on its commitment to effective multilateralism. Presenting results generated by MERCURY, an EU research programme into multilateralism, this book addresses a central research question: does the EU deliver on its commitment to effective multilateralism? Globalisation has created powerful new incentives for states to cooperate and has generated renewed interest in multilateralism. While a large body of work exists on multilateralism as a concept, it continues to be ill-defined and poorly understood. This book sheds new light on 21st century multilateralism by exploring conceptual approaches as well as generating innovative, empirical knowledge on its practice. Research on EU external relations has increasingly focused on the concept of ‘effective multilateralism’. Yet, the application of this concept as a guiding principle of EU foreign policy in non-security policy areas has rarely been examined. This book explores whether the EU is pursuing effective multilateralism in specific policy areas, including trade, climate change and conflict resolution, and distinct geographical and institutional settings, both internal to the EU and in specified regions, international organisations (IOs) and bilateral partnerships. This book offers evidence-based, actionable policy lessons from Europe’s experience in promoting multilateralism. The European Union and Multilateralism in the 21st Century will be of interest to students and scholars of international relations, international organizations, and European Union politics and foreign policy.

This book aims to pave the way for a new interdisciplinary approach to global cooperation research. It does so by bringing in disciplines whose insights about human behaviour might provide a crucial yet hitherto neglected foundation for understanding how and under which conditions global cooperation can succeed. It provides the state of the art on human cooperation in selected disciplines (evolutionary anthropology, decision-sciences, social psychology, complexity sciences), written by leading experts. The book also offers reflections on how to deal with the epistemological and methodological challenges that arise when bringing micro, meso and macro levels together.

"This paper examines international health cooperation globally, and for China particularly, to provide information for international communities and their partner counties. It seeks to improve the harmony and effectiveness of international health cooperation from its foundations in order to develop specific policy actions. The paper reviews international cooperation on health, analysing its history and current trends, its importance and influencing factors, and the main players and challenges, particularly in China. Based on an extensive literature review and face to face interviews, this paper begins with an overall picture of global international cooperation on health, then analyses the current situation of international cooperation conducted in China. It outlines the benefits, needs and opportunities of international health cooperation in China and finally explores the major challenges this entails. The paper can be used as a resource for international cooperation on health for the growing numbers of public health professionals who are exploring issues related to international health cooperation. It also serves as a common platform for discussing the current situation and possible new directions for international health cooperation, particularly in China, and provides a body of useful knowledge and possible solutions for policymakers, researchers and international partners alike. The findings suggest as the next step conducting a further and more in-depth study of strategies necessary to address the influencing factors identified in this study, in order to enhance international health cooperation by Chinese agencies"--P. 1.

This book, which brings together scholars from the developed and developing world, explores one of the most salient features of contemporary international relations: South-South cooperation. It builds on existing empirical evidence and offers a comparative analytical framework to critically analyse the aid policies and programmes of ten rising donors from the global South. Amongst these are several BRICS (Brazil, India, China and South Africa) but also a number of less studied countries, including Cuba, Venezuela, the United Arab Emirates, Colombia, Turkey, and Korea. The chapters trace the ideas, identities and actors that shape contemporary South-South cooperation, and also explore potential differences and points of convergence with traditional North-South aid. This thought-provoking edited collection will appeal to students and scholars of international relations, international political economy, development, economics, area studies and business. /div

The realization that available funding for large-scale space programs is rapidly moving beyond the financial reach of any single nation has fostered arguments that innovative international collaboration is becoming a necessity. It may even be that cooperative arrangements have become the only way to initiate & sustain the more ambitious space projects of the future. In addition, enhanced international cooperation may well be the preferred & most effective approach to carrying out some projects already on the space agenda. Starting from an analysis of the difficulties & benefits of space cooperation, this report recommends the changes in international space relations needed to enable the major spacefaring nations, which carry out the bulk of humanity's activities in space, to band together so as to afford the future large scale space programs that are needed to expand their knowledge, to explore new frontiers, & to guarantee their common security. This open access handbook analyses the role of development cooperation in achieving the 2030 Agenda in a global context of 'contested cooperation'. Development actors, including governments providing aid or South-South Cooperation, developing countries, and non-governmental actors (civil society, philanthropy, and businesses) constantly challenge underlying narratives and norms of development. The book explores how reconciling these differences fosters achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals. Sachin Chaturvedi is Director General at the Research and Information System for Developing Countries (RIS), a New Delhi, India-based think tank. Heiner Janus is a researcher in the Inter- and Transnational Cooperation programme at the German Development Institute. Stephan Klingebiel is Chair of the Inter- and Transnational Cooperation programme at the German Development Institute and Senior Lecturer at the University of Marburg, Germany. Xiaoyun Li is Chair Professor at China Agricultural University and Honorary Dean of the China Institute for South-South Cooperation in Agriculture. Prof. Li is the Chair of the Network of Southern Think Tanks and Chair of the China International Development Research Network. André de Mello e Souza is a researcher at the Institute for Applied Economic Research (IPEA), a Brazilian governmental think tank. Elizabeth Sidiropoulos is Chief Executive of the South African Institute of International Affairs. She has co-edited Development Cooperation and Emerging Powers: New Partners or Old Patterns (2012) and Institutional Architecture and Development: Responses from Emerging Powers (2015).
