In this comprehensive, sociorhetorical interpretation of Colossians, Roy R. Jeal explores the letter’s portrayal of the grand vision that extends from the realm of God before the creation of the cosmos to the new reality and new culture of the life of fullness in Christ. The commentary analyzes the pictures the text evokes in the human visual imagination, identifies the persuasive modes of discourse in the letter, and evaluates the range of textures that interweave to produce the dynamic rhetorical argument of Colossians. Demands to conform to “empty deceitful philosophy, human tradition, and the elements of the world” rather than to Christ are irrelevant for believers who have been transferred from darkness to the light of the Son of God’s kingdom. The rhetoric of the letter moves believers to ideologies of living in the body of Christ where orderly behavior guided by love contrasts with the chaotic, self-indulgent, divisive uncertainties of Mediterranean existence.

Every serious student of the Bible desires to understand the text, discover the biblical principles, and apply the truths to his/her life. This commentary is designed to help students, pastors, and Bible teachers understand Colossians and Philemon in a simple manner. Working from the popular New International Version (NIV), the author provides helpful commentary on the text verse-by-verse. This verse-by-verse commentary is different from others in two respects. First, it is brief while some commentaries are unnecessarily wordy and verbose. Second, it is Pentecostal in outlook. This implies that we generally adhere to the doctrine of biblical inerrancy and adopt a literalist approach to the interpretation of the Bible. The major aim of this commentary is to expose readers to Colossians and Philemon, two closely related New Testament letters. Colossians deals with the absolute supremacy and sufficiency of Jesus Christ as the head of all creation and of the church. No book in the Bible presents a more comprehensive picture of the fullness of Christ.

The Knowing the Bible series is a resource designed to help Bible readers better understand and apply God’s Word. These 12-week study lead participants through books of the Bible and are made up of four basic components: (1) Reflection questions help readers engage the text at a deeper level; (2) “Gospel Glimpses” highlight the gospel of grace throughout the book; (3) “Whole-Bible Connections” show how any given passage connects to the Bible’s overarching story of redemption, culminating in Christ; and (4) “Theological Soundings” identify how historic orthodox doctrines are taught or reinforced throughout Scripture. With contributions from an array of influential pastors and church leaders, these gospel-centered studies will help Christians see and cherish the message of God’s grace on each and every page of the Bible. The books of Colossians and Philemon complement each other as two New Testament texts that gloriously display the gospel and its implications for how God’s people should live today. Written around the same time, both letters resonate with the apostle Paul’s overriding passion to magnify Jesus Christ as the supreme manifestation of God’s redemptive purposes.

Nobody knows for certain who wrote the letter to the Hebrews. Many scholars (such as Arthur Pink and the early Catholics) believe Paul was the author. Others claim it was written by Timothy or Barnabas. Some even suggest that the writers were Aquila and Priscilla. Still others (such as Martin Luther and R.C. Lenski) believe that Apollos wrote it. But despite the learned theories, which claim to prove the authors identity, none succeeds, and the fact remains that despite two thousand years of scholarship, nobody knows who actually penned these immortal words. Even if we knew the authors identity, the knowledge would not help us very much. It would not change one word of the letter, nor make it more effective. Exploring Hebrews does not waste time following rabbit trails, but instead concentrates on what the letter itself has to say. Every verse is covered and carefully explained. Our goal is to learn, bearing in mind that although God has not revealed the identity of the human author of Hebrews, the letter was clearly written under divine inspiration. All Scripture is God-breathed (2 Timothy 3:16) and The prophecy came not in old time by the will of man: but holy men of God spoke as they were moved by the Holy Ghost (2 Peter 1:21).
