Parkinson’s disease is the second most common neurodegenerative disorder in the world after Alzheimer’s disease. Thanks to the pioneering works of Arvid Carlson in the 20th century identifying dopamine as the main neurochemical agent involved in Parkinson’s disease’s onset and progress, our understanding of the neuropathology has increased. The elaboration of L-Dopa as the first pharmacological treatment approach has brought new hope for curing or at least slowing the neurodegenerative progress and the decline of motor and cognitive functions in Parkinson’s disease patients. To date, imaging techniques along with genetic and biochemical tools have allowed scientists and clinicians to predict and diagnose the disease several years prior to the motor disorder’s appearance. Experimental and Clinical Evidence of the Neuropathology of Parkinson’s Disease sheds light on the history of Parkinson’s disease as well as the recent literature on the epidemiological data worldwide including the prevalence of the disease, the morbimortality rates, and the sex dimorphism and aging components. It addresses the current neuropathological evidence of Parkinson’s disease, including the latest discoveries in terms of neuropathology and treatments available or under clinical trials with the efficacy and limitations of each. Covering topics such as epidemiology, stem cells, and neuropathology, this premier reference source is an excellent resource for clinicians, physicians, epidemiologists, neuroscientists, microbiologists, biochemists, pharmacologists, toxicologists, medical professionals, nurses, medical students and educators, librarians, researchers, and academicians.

This practical guide to the diagnosis of neurodegenerative diseases discusses modern molecular techniques, morphological classification, fundamentals of clinical symptomology, diagnostic pitfalls and immunostaining protocols. It is based on the proteinopathy concept of neurodegenerative disease, which has influenced classification and provides new strategies for therapy. Numerous high-quality images, including histopathology photomicrographs and neuroradiology scans, accompany the description of morphologic alterations and interpretation of immunoreactivities. Diagnostic methods and criteria are placed within recent developments in neuropathology, including the now widespread application of immunohistochemistry. To aid daily practice, the guide includes diagnostic algorithms and offers personal insights from experienced experts in the field. Special focus is given to the way brain tissue should be handled during diagnosis. This is a must-have reference for medical specialists and specialist medical trainees in the fields of pathology, neuropathology and neurology working with neuropathologic features of neurodegenerative diseases.

Completely rewritten and updated, this new edition is almost twice the size of its predecessor. Illustrated in colour throughout, and with contributions from the world's leading authorities, it is the definitive reference on the neuropathology of dementia. It gives practical guidance to pathologists, describes the contribution of neuroimaging to diagnosis, and surveys the clinical features of dementia. New material includes: Three entirely new chapters on neuroimaging, molecular diagnostics, and transgenic models. Two chapters on tauopathies under new authorship. A chapter under new authorship on synucleinopathies, which includes multiple system atrophy.

In the past five years significant progress has been made in our basic and clinical under standing of Parkinson's disease. The discovery that MPTP, a relatively simple molecule, is able to induce parkinsonism in otherwise healthy adult humans, and the recent interest in the possibility of "transplantation" procedures as a therapeutic modality in the treatment of Parkin son's disease have generated enormous interest in research related to Parkinson's disease. In this setting, the National Parkinson Foundation decided to organize a research meeting to bring together scientists actively engaged in research relevant to the study of Parkinson's disease, to accelerate its progress and to promote an exchange of ideas. This meeting took place in Janu ary 1988 at Key Biscayne, Florida. It was decided to publish the proceedings ofthis meeting to allow rapid documentation of the participants current findings and views regarding this rapidly of this volume follows the organization of the meeting and begins evolving field. The structure with a clinical and neuropathological review of current knowledge regarding Parkinson's dis ease. Since dopaminergic neurons playa major role in the pathophysiology of the disease, many of the contributions relate to some aspects of dopaminergic function including localiza tion, regulation, and pharmacology of dopamine receptors. A special effort has been made to provide a summary of the present knowledge of the cellular biology of the dopaminergic neurons.

The brain is the most complex organ in our body. Indeed, it is perhaps the most complex structure we have ever encountered in nature. Both structurally and functionally, there are many peculiarities that differentiate the brain from all other organs. The brain is our connection to the world around us and by governing nervous system and higher function, any disturbance induces severe neurological and psychiatric disorders that can have a devastating effect on quality of life. Our understanding of the physiology and biochemistry of the brain has improved dramatically in the last two decades. In particular, the critical role of cations, including magnesium, has become evident, even if incompletely understood at a mechanistic level. The exact role and regulation of magnesium, in particular, remains elusive, largely because intracellular levels are so difficult to routinely quantify. Nonetheless, the importance of magnesium to normal central nervous system activity is self-evident given the complicated homeostatic mechanisms that maintain the concentration of this cation within strict limits essential for normal physiology and metabolism. There is also considerable accumulating evidence to suggest alterations to some brain functions in both normal and pathological conditions may be linked to alterations in local magnesium concentration. This book, containing chapters written by some of the foremost experts in the field of magnesium research, brings together the latest in experimental and clinical magnesium research as it relates to the central nervous system. It offers a complete and updated view of magnesiums involvement in central nervous system function and in so doing, brings together two main pillars of contemporary neuroscience research, namely providing an explanation for the molecular mechanisms involved in brain function, and emphasizing the connections between the molecular changes and behavior. It is the untiring efforts of those magnesium researchers who have dedicated their lives to unraveling the mysteries of magnesiums role in biological systems that has inspired the collation of this volume of work.
