"Communication is a critical skill for all people. Communication is a foundational skill of the work of athletic coaching, and the coach-athlete relationship requires some coach communication that is not limited strictly to conversations about sport performance. It is unclear whether skills developed to communicate effectively in the sport performance context carry over to other contexts. Athletic coaches need to be able to support the overall well-being of athletes by identifying potential problems and connecting athletes to help. To do this, a critical need is to communicate effectively about well-being issues. A paucity of literature exists about the baseline communication performance of coaches in conversations about well-being, about how coaches view their role and efficacy in such conversations, and about what specific tools and methods might be used to study this. There were two overarching purposes for this study. The first was to explore the feasibility of research into the baseline communication performance of coaches in conversations about well-being, how coaches view their role and efficacy in such conversations, and what specific tools and methods might be used to study these issues. The second purpose was to gather preliminary data to plan and legitimize such research. In order to investigate the feasibility and obtain preliminary data to address these issues, a group of athletic coaches were asked to participate in three simulated case conversations about well-being and to complete an online survey. This group was compared to a group of health coaches who performed the same tasks. Conversational data was coded using an adaptation of the Roter Interaction Analysis System (RIAS). A mixture of qualitative and quantitative methods were used to analyze the resulting data, as well as respond to "can it work?" questions about the tools, methods, and theoretical frameworks used. Key results include evidence for the need for institutional support to support athletic coach participation in communication training, support for adapted motivational interviewing as a useful framework for viewing communication behaviors in conversations about well-being, and the utility of RIAS as a method for quickly coding data from live or audio recordings of conversations. Preliminary data revealed that athletic coaches are more directive, ask fewer questions, and elicit less information from athletes. Health coaches elicited more utterances expressing concern and more information from conversational partners. Implications for future research and practice include evidence supporting the utility of these tools and methods, key constructs to target in potential development of coach-specific training, as well as building institutional support for the need for communication skills training to increase outcomes related to conversations about well-being between athletic coaches and student-athletes."--Abstract from author supplied metadata.

Student-athletes are at high risk for poor mental health. Leaders within the varsity sport environment influence athlete mental health and help-seeking. This dissertation explored the behaviors, perspectives and needs of athletes, coaches, and athletic trainers as it pertains to mental health in sport. Three studies were conducted, the first utilized the Theory of Planned Behavior to explore factors associated with coach-athlete conversations about mental health. A coach's Attitude towards having a conversation with an athlete significantly influenced their Intention to do so. Perceived Behavioral Control (PBC) significantly influenced the relationship between Social Norms and Intention. Both PBC and Social Norms had a significant relationship with the Behavior (having a conversation about mental health with an athlete). The second study applied a conceptual model from Horn's Working Model of Coach Effectiveness to explore how an athlete's perception of coach behavior impacts attitudes and help-seeking behaviors. Psychological distress levels influenced an athlete's Perception of their coach's behavior. Openness to help-seeking was significantly related to help-seeking Behaviors and influenced the relationship between personal characteristics and help-seeking. Perception of coach behaviors influenced the relationship between psychological distress and help-seeking from a coach. The last study sought to determine the acceptance of an online varsity sport-specific mental health resource. Preliminary results were promising; The PEER Network was frequently used over the study period and participants had positive and supportive feedback. Overall, results from the three studies suggest that perceived ability and social support may influence whether coach-athlete conversations about mental health occur. Due to the effects of these variables, coach mental health training should focus on improving the skills required for these conversations and normalizing mental health in sport. As an athlete's perception of coach behavior mediated the relationship between psychological distress and help-seeking, training should also focus on clear ways to show athletes that coaches are supportive of mental health. Athlete-specific training should try and improve attitudes towards help-seeking and highlight the value from seeking help. The PEER Network may be an easily accessible and context-specific way of achieving these educational goals for members of the varsity athletic community.

The present study sought to expand on past research by examining the relationship between coaching behaviors (i.e., controlling coaching and autonomy-supportive coaching) and athletic injury. One hundred Division I athletes were given a battery of questionnaires, in the form of a single Qualtrics survey to assess the relationship between coaching behaviors and athletic injury. Controlling coaching was found to be positively correlated to the presence of pain and certain perceived causes of injury, as well as negatively correlated to athletes discussing their injury with their coach and the coach being an influence in athletes' decision to return to their sport. Autonomy-supportive coaching was shown to be positively correlated to athletes discussing their injury with their coach and one's coach being an influence in their return to their sport. As such, this study supported past research in showing that autonomy-supportive coaching is related to more adaptive outcomes than controlling coaching behaviors. Therefore, it is recommended that coaches use autonomy-supportive coaching in order to enhance the psychological, as well as physical well-being of their athletes.

The purpose of this study was to explore coach-athlete interactive behaviours. More specifically, it investigated why coaches choose to interact with their athletes, and why coaches interact with their athletes in a particular manner. Head male coaches, of nine female competitive club soccer teams participated in the current study. Each coach was videotaped and audiotaped during two practices. Each video was uploaded to a computer and reviewed. Coaches then participated in a stimulated recall interview. During the interview, coaches were shown a total of 15 video clips that included footage of themselves interacting with an individual athlete, group of athletes, and the entire team. Coaches were asked to expand on the dynamics of these interactions. The results of the study indicate that when coaches interact with athletes, their reasoning is two-fold: first they decide to interact, and second, they decide the way in which they should interact with their athlete(s) based on several factors. Coaches interacted for one of four reasons: (1) connection to a larger picture, (2) teachable moments, (3) standards of behaviour, and (4) organization. The manner in which coaches interacted with their athletes was influenced by four factors: (1) knowledge of the athlete, (2) degree of athlete input, (3) degree of tolerance, and (4) team unit involved. Together, these results helped to construct a model that illustrates how coaches make decisions with regards to coach-athlete interactive behaviour in context. Preliminary findings indicate that coaching philosophy permeates this entire process.

The purpose of this study was to analyze the coach-athlete interactions occurring in a successful sport program for athletes with disabilities and their able-bodied siblings. The successful nature of this program was established by its athletes' competitive achievements and by the athletes' reports of positive experiences within this sport environment. This study utilized state space grid and observational methodology and was the second application of this methodology in field-based sport psychology research (Erickson, Côté, Hollenstein, & Deakin, in press). The head coach of the program and twenty-four athletes were observed over multiple practice sessions. Both coach and athlete behaviour was coded continuously for the duration of each practice session. Measures of coach-athlete interaction structure, based on dynamic systems concepts, were derived from these coded behaviours. These measures were examined for the team as a whole and compared between groups within the team (competitive vs. recreational athletes and athletes with disabilities vs. able-bodied athletes). Results indicated that the coach-athlete interactions of the team were highly patterned. Within this consistent pattern, the coach spent most of her time silently observing the athletes. Other commonly exhibited behaviours included individualized technical instruction, organization, and positive feedback. With regards to behavioural sequencing, the coach's time spent observing the athletes was often interspersed with periods of organization, instruction, and feedback. The coach appeared to adapt her coaching style according to the competitive levels of the athletes, but no differences emerged when comparing the coach-athlete interactions between athletes with disabilities and able-bodied athletes. Overall, this successful sport environment was characterized by positive coach-athlete interactions that were deliberately patterned and mutually respectful.

Introduction: Adolescents and young adults experience a high level of mental health conditions.These disorders appear to be increasing in number and severity. The prevalence rate for 18-25-years-olds is 8.7% in 12 months. Mental health conditions are treatable, yet many people do not seek professional help. Seeking help from a professional source is particularly important for preventing, early detection, treatment, and recovery from mental health conditions. Purpose: The purpose of this mixed-methods study is to demonstrate the prevalence of depression, explore student-athletes attitudes towards seeking mental health help, understand what factors may influence help-seeking behaviors, and explore the athlete's perceptions of the role that athletic trainers play in the assessment and referral process. Methods: An exploratory, concurrent mixed methods design was used. Survey data from the ATSPPH-SF and PHQ-9 were collected from collegiate student-athletes. A phenomenological approach will guide the qualitative research process. Semi-structured interviews will be audiotaped, transcribed, and analyzed using an interpretive thematic analytical approach. Study Participants: National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) student-athletes participating at the Divsion III (DIII) level. Results: The prevalence of depression was almost 42% in the study population. There was no relationship between PHQ-9 scores and sex. Attitudes towards seeking help were generally positive. Females tend to have more favorable attitudes than males, but this finding was not statistically significant. There was no relationhship between PHQ-9 scores and ATSPPH-SF scores. Barriers to help-seeking included perceived seriousness, stigma, lack of time, accessibility, prefer to handle issues on own, and cost. Facilitators to help-seeking included perceived and nee-problems that were serious enough to warrant help and a supportive network. Clinical Importance: As we continue to address the mental health crisis, it is imperative to understand what prevents student-athletes from seeking professional psychological help and develop supportive programs to help them overcome these barriers. Certified athletic trainers, coaches, and other athletic personel need to understand the seriousness of untreated mental health conditions and be educated to recognize when an athlete may be struggling with issues beyond their control. Knowing when to refer a student-athlete to a professional is essential in preventing potential unnecessary and irreversible consequences.

"Intercollegiate athletes balance many roles during a vital time of their identity development. Research regarding collegiate level athletic identity has grown in the past thirty years. More specifically, the Athletic Identity Measurement Scale (AIMS; Brewer, Van Raalte, and Linder, 1993) was developed to assess the psychological benefits and risks associated with athletic identity. Much of the previous literature has examined these benefits and risks in Division I student-athletes. The goal of this study was to explore the relationship between athletic identity and well-being in Division III student-athletes, a generally understudied population. An additional aim of the study was to determine if participation in non-athletic activities (campus involvement) positively impacted well-being in Division III student-athletes. The results indicated a significant relationship between athletic identity and well-being. Furthermore, the interaction of campus involvement, athletic identity, and well-being was determined to not be significant. Clinical implications, limitations and strengths to the study, and future directions are discussed.
