The key to mystery of Jesus is hidden in the paronomasia of Chrēstos and Christos. Still the learned Egyptologist passes over in silence the real and profound meaning of the two appellations. The Talmud and the Masters of Wisdom affirm that Jesus ben Pandira was the historical Christ, who had lived a century earlier, in the fourth year of the reign of Alexander Jannaeus, King of Judea. An Initiate, who had succeeded in merging his spiritual being into the glorious state of Buddhi-Manas, may be regarded as a Christos after his last and supreme initiation, just as he was called Chrēstos before that. Carnalising the Christ-principle is an absurdity and a blasphemy. Theosophists will never accept a “Christ made Flesh,” or an anthropomorphic God, still less a “Shepherd” in the person of a Pope. However, a man of flesh assuming the Christ-condition temporarily is a matter-of-fact on the plane of matter, and a subjective reality in the spiritual realm, which is the proper habitat of he divine soul. We fully agree with our esteemed friend that the suppression and perversion of esoteric facts in the gospels is not so mischievously done as to prevent the Occultist from reading between the lines.

The compound term Theophania (from theos, “God,” and phainesthai, “to appear”) does not simply mean the appearance of God in man but the actual presence of a God in man, a divine incarnation.

The first, semi-divine, pure and spiritual Race of Humanity had the “truths of God,” and lived up to them, and their ideals. They preserved them, so long as there was hardly any evil, and hence scarcely a possible abuse of that knowledge and those truths. But evolution and the gradual fall into materiality is also one of the “truths” and also one of the laws of “God.” And as mankind progressed, and became with every generation more of the earth, earthly, the individuality of each temporary Ego began to assert itself. It is personal selfishness that develops and urges man on to abuse of his knowledge and power. And selfishness is a human building, whose windows and doors are ever wide open for every kind of iniquity to enter into man’s soul. Few were the men during the early adolescence of mankind, and fewer still are they now, who feel disposed to put into practice Pope’s forcible declaration that he would tear out his own heart, if it had no better disposition than to love only himself, and laugh at all his neighbours. Hence the necessity of gradually taking away from man the divine knowledge and power, which became with every new human cycle more dangerous as a double-edged weapon, whose evil side was ever threatening one’s neighbour, and whose power for good was lavished freely only upon self. Those few “elect” whose inner natures had remained unaffected by their outward physical growth, thus became in time the sole guardians of the mysteries revealed, passing the knowledge to those most fit to receive it, and keeping it inaccessible to others. Reject this explanation from the Secret Teachings, and the very name of Religion will become synonymous with deception and fraud.

Dogmatic theology has no foundation in any part of the United States Declaration of Independence. All reference to religion and Christianity, or God’s commands, are left out. If any Adepts have influenced Washington, or brought about the great American Revolution, it was the Brothers of the Rosie Cross and not the Indian or Tibetan Initiates. The inferences drawn from W.Q. Judge’s article “The Adepts in America in 1776” are too far-fetched by our imaginative correspondent. We can, however, confidently affirm that the French Revolution was greatly influenced by the Count de St. Germain.

Higher Ego is the sole bearer of all its alter Egos on earth and their sole representative in the subjectivity of Devachan. Higher Ego, or Nous, is our true Individuality, that keeps reincarnating and clothing itself in a new personality at every new birth. Yet that noble and lofty Noetic Entity, that allows us to think and enjoy the boon of self-consciousness, is not ours. It belongs to Divine Entities from higher and earlier worlds and planets, whose Karma had not been exhausted when their world went into Pralaya. By quickening the human mind they purify themselves in the fire of suffering and individual experience in order to re-become the One Essence. And so can we, Their terrestrial reflection, if by purity of thought and deed we rise to Their plane and partake of Their divine essence. Philosophically, Higher Ego is the apex of a triangle. He is “crucified” between two Opposing Forces: the personal ray dragged down by impure, selfish desires on the left side, and the uplifting purity of thought and deed on the right. Higher Ego is Chrishna-Christos, the true Christ of the churches, our personal “god.” On the plane of matter, Chr?stos is Christos’ lower but aspiring counterpart — an uninitiated adept or higher chela about to be admitted into Gupta-Vidya, i.e., Occultism’s Greater Mysteries. Therefore, there are two Christs: one above and one below. Why? Because the Higher needs the Lower as much as the Lower needs the Higher, for “gods feed on men.” Some Theosophists got into the habit of using “Self” and “Ego” as synonymous, of associating “Self” with only man’s higher individual or even personal self or ego, whereas “Self” ought never to be applied except to the One Universal Self. Even those pledged to their Higher Self by solemn vows, and who were personally instructed by H.P. Blavatsky, did not seem to understand the indissoluble link connecting their “Higher Egos” with the One Universal Self. When their knowledge was examined, most could not explain the difference between the Higher and the Lower Self and scarcely any avoided a confusion between Higher Self and Higher Ego!
