The successful evaluation of capital projects requires not only a thorough understanding of traditional techniques of capital budgeting but advanced techniques as well. Riahi-Belkaoui examines the multidimensionality of capital budgeting in its various facets and in ways that executives with no special facility in the subject can follow. He covers replacement decisions, capital rationing, capital budgeting under inflation uncertainty, capital budgeting in a multinational setting with attention to political risks, social project evaluation, and concepts of wealth measurement and distribution. The result is a wide ranging treatment for executive decision makers in finance, banking, investment, and general management, and for their colleagues with similar interests in the academic community. Riahi-Belkaoui begins by examining the principles underlying the time value of money. In Chapter Two he introduces capital budgeting and in Chapter Three moves to advanced capital budgeting. There he discusses such advanced topics as replacement decisions, capital rationing, and capital budgeting under uncertainty and inflation. In Chapter Four he takes up the same issues associated with capital budgeting but in a global context, and in Chapter Five, the determination of political risk and its use in capital budgeting internationally. Chapter Six compares the techniques of leasing versus purchasing and their reliance on capital budgeting techniques. In Chapter Seven he turns to the techniques of capital budgeting applied to social projects, and ends the book with an examination of the behavior and cognitive implications of wealth measurement and distribution. This is a useful survey and examination of the traditional and advanced techniques of capital budgeting and their applications in domestic and international contexts.

How can we be sure that all those projects, programmes and activities that depend for their quality, efficiency and effectiveness on people’s performance have met their objectives? How can we improve the ways in which these projects, programmes and activities are planned so that realistic and useful measurement of their outcomes and value for money becomes possible? How can we produce from these evaluations data of the quality and a standard required to drive future improvement? Evaluating Human Capital Projects addresses these issues for professionals in the private, the public and the not-for-profit sectors. It shows them how to plan and track their investments with the professionalism and discipline widely applied to other capital investments. It is also written as a sourcebook for both professional and Masters-level students in business, health and a wide range of socio-economic disciplines. It addresses effective planning, stakeholder engagement, result-tracking, the identification and removal of barriers to good performance. It provides ideas, theoretical background, extensive references to practice and analysis from the authors’ extensive experience or planning, collection of data, analysis of data and attribution, and reporting to drive future improvement. It is intended to raise the bar on the professionalism with which human capital investments are planned and measured.

With flair and an originality of approach, Crundwell brings his considerable experience to bear on this crucial topic. Uniquely, this book discusses the technical and financial aspects of decision-making in engineering and demonstrates these through case studies. It’s a hugely important matter as, of course, engineering solutions and financial decisions are intimately tied together. The best engineers combine the technical and financial cases in determining new solutions to opportunities, challenges and problems. To get your project approved, no matter the size of it, the financial case must be clear and compelling. This book provides a framework for engineers and scientists to undertake financial evaluations and assessments of engineering or production projects.

The adjusted net present value approach to international capital budgeting has been questioned recently as to its theoretical correctness and ease of applicability. The alternative set forth by critics is a return to the weighted average cost of capital. In this paper we compare these two approaches, show the conceptual superiority of adjusted net present value to weighted average cost of capital (indeed the latter is a restrictive special case of the former), and reaffirm the usefulness of valuation by components in the international corporate setting. In particular, we illustrate its application to projects involving blocked funds, concessional finance, cash flows with differing exposures to nominal and real exchange rate movements, and political risks that depend on project cash flows as well as to sensitivity analysis in general...
