Glasgow City Region - composed of eight Local Authorities - is Scotland’s largest integrated economic area, accounting for a third of Scotland's jobs and economic output. Over the last two decades, the unemployment rate has decreased to a record low, and the share of degree holders has increased significantly. Despite its overall economic success and high growth potential, Glasgow City Region faces several challenges. The region’s productivity levels compare poorly with other UK cities and major OECD metropolitan regions, and income deprivation and economic inactivity are high. As the economy has recovered from the COVID-19 pandemic, the pressure on the labour market has increased, resulting in labour shortages. The challenges for Glasgow City Region’s labour market call for greater efforts to enhance and future-proof the skills and employability systems in the region. This OECD report reviews and offers recommendations on three of the most pressing challenges facing the Glasgow City Region: i) reinforcing re- and upskilling opportunities for individuals in work and aligning skills supply with demand, ii) enhancing labour market inclusion of the economically inactive, and iii) strengthening school-to-work transitions of young people.

Published in 1999, Working Europe: Reshaping European employment systems offers a fresh analysis of recent changes in labour markets and the restructuring of welfare states. The analyzes presented in the articles not only focus on labour market changes, but take up the important issues of: * How labour markets have been regulated and directed * How the various social security systems offered by the welfare state are related to the questions of labour markets and employment systems * How efficient labour market policies are in reducing unemployment * How employment is locally created and initiated * How the gender system is related to employment systems. This book is the first to offer a full picture of the restructuring of the employment systems and the complex relationship between employment, the welfare state and concepts of work.

EURES offers information, advice and job placement services to citizens of the EU member states, Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway and Switzerland, and also monitors the labor market situation in and across these countries. This book marks the work and staff of EURES, launched in 1994, on the occasion of the service's 15th anniversary. It tracks the legislative steps that led to the creation of the service and offers a retrospective portrayal of the network's members and achievements over its history, before examining the potential topics with which the service may deal in the future.--Publisher's description.

Companies change their organization in response to crises, globalization, and increasing competition. Restructuring processes take place and part of the workforce is forced to find other employment. This book explores and explains employment security systems with a specific focus on job-to-job transitions for redundant employees in four European countries: Sweden, the United Kingdom, Austria, and Spain. In addition, it addresses possible lessons the Netherlands can learn from these foreign job-to-job arrangements. This multidisciplinary book will be of special interest to members of the European Commission, policymakers, and academics, as well as to students in the fields of labor market, social security, industrial relations, labor law, labor economics, and sociology.
