What role can entrepreneurship play in a European economy that is more and more open to the rest of the world? In this European construction, what is the place of the countries and economies that have only recently converted to a free market economy? It is these questions, among others, that this book explores and discusses in particular. The future steps required in developing European entrepreneurship in a dynamic and international context are also analysed and synthesized. The expert contributors reveal both the macro and micro factors that influence European entrepreneurial development, with an emphasis on high-tech firms. The particular topics addressed include: SME research and innovation policy issues; starting and growing a new venture; innovation, marketing and entrepreneurial networks; entrepreneurship and regional (cross-border) development; building competitive advantage of SMEs; and social and cultural aspects of entrepreneurship. This comprehensive work will provide a timely and important basis for academics, researchers, students and policy-makers in the fields of entrepreneurship and European studies.

Mourdoukoutas argues that as globalization gains momentum and reengineering becomes universal, firms can no longer be sure of achieving sustainable competitive advantages through improved operating effectiveness alone. The new business strategy will focus on revenue growth and on the constructive destruction of conventional corporations, through collective entrepreneurship and its division in the product supply chain. To enhance revenues through the management of constructive destruction, companies must achieve organizational mutations and permutations, turning themselves from hierarchical managerial units into entrepreneurial networks. These entrepreneurial networks are communities that share a common fate: the risks and rewards associated with the discovery and exploitation of new businesses. Mourdoukoutas says that in some cases entrepreneurial networks can be extended outside the conventional borders of the corporation—vertically to suppliers, distributors, and customers, and horizontally to former competitors. In such networks the focus of business strategy should not be on the division of labor by task or process; rather, upon the divison of entrepreneurship and its diffusion among all of the firm's members. This is a challenging and thoughtful study and analysis for corporate management and their academic colleagues.

Understanding the New Global Economy: A European Perspective argues that globalisation is facing economic and political headwinds. A new global economic geography is emerging, cross-border relationships are changing, and global governance structures must come to terms with a new multipolar world. This book clarifies the fundamental questions and trade-offs in this new global economy, and gives readers the tools to understand contemporary debates. It presents a range of possible policy options, without being prescriptive. Following a modular structure, each chapter takes a similar approach but can also be read as a stand-alone piece. State-of-the-art academic research and historical experiences are weaved throughout the book, and readers are pointed towards relevant sources of information . This text is an accessible guide to the contemporary world economy, suited to students of international economics, political economy, globalisation, and European studies. It will also be valuable reading for researchers, professionals, and general readers interested in economics, politics, and civil society.

Entrepreneurship and growth are central concerns of policy makers around the world. Local Heroes in the Global Village introduces public policies for the promotion of entrepreneurship on a comparative, primarily German-American level. The book contributes to the debate what role public policies play in stimulating national and regional economic growth. With a better understanding of the complexity and variety of existent entrepreneurship policies in the U.S. and Germany the reader of this volume will be able to formulate best practice, hands-on strategies which aim to promote nations as well as regions in an "entrepreneurial economy".

The changeable business environment requires a new business framework and an understanding of the global market trends and the culture that will impact on business. Globalization and Entrepreneurship in Small Countries considers important business principles and makes them accessible for entrepreneurs and small business owners. It addresses the role of managers and leaders and management techniques in the context of global strategy of companies, as well as the culture diversity that comes with globalization of organizations. To meet the constantly changing conditions and demands, business must transcend boundaries to get what it needs regardless of where it exists – geographically, organizationally, and functionally. This book draws together earlier literature on SME development and internationalization from disparate sources into a cohesive body of work, which traces the evolution of our understanding of the topic. It explores just how globalization affects the demand for business and entrepreneurship, and will therefore be of interest to researchers, academics, policymakers, and students in the fields of entrepreneurship, globalisation, organisational studies, and SMEs development in small countries.
