Excerpt from Eulogy on George Washington The composition, now with all due deference offered to the public, was originally prepared at the request of some of the inhabitants of Georgetown, with a view to its being delivered in the Episcopal Church, on the 22d of February last; but various circumstances intervened, and the author with pleasure saw the task to which he felt himself incompetent devolve upon the very respectable and reverend gentleman, whose more peculiar province it is to address the public in that sacred place, and who was every way so well qualified to do justice to the subject: He could not however, deny himself the satisfaction of manifesting his readiness to comply with the wishes of his fellow citizens, as far as the powers of his mind admit, and he embraces with readiness the opportunity thus accidentally offered him of testifying his veneration for the memory of General Washington. Excerpt from Eulogies and Orations on the Life and Death of General George Washington, First President of the United States of America In obedience to your will, I rise your humble organ, with the hope of executing a part of the system of public mourning which you have been pleased to adopt, commemorative of the death of the most illustrious and most beloved personage this country has ever produced; and which, while it transmits to posterity your sense of the awful event, faintly represents your knowledge of the consummate excellence you so cordially honour. Desperate, indeed, is any attempt on earth to meet correspondently this dispensation of Heaven; for, while with pious resignation we submit to the will of an all-gracious Providence, we can never cease lamenting, in our finite view of Omnipotent Wisdom, the heart-rending privation for which our nation weeps. Excerpt from An Eulogy, on General George Washington, Who Died on the 14th of Dec; 1799: Pronounced at Dorchester, Feb, 22, 1800; It Being the Day Recommended by Congress, for the National Lamentation of His Death The first effusions of grief, for the death of our beloved Washington, have been poured forth without measure. His venerable remains, with the most solemn rites, and amidst the loud lamentations of an agonizing multitude have been committed to the tomb. Already has the national legislature decreed and performed for him the highest, honorary, funeral obsequies, which gratitude and veneration could suggest; and already has their example been followed by vast assemblies of citizens, through every section of the Union. Yet still the patriotic heart dwells on the distressing subject. To-day its emotions are revived. At this period of the year, the birth of America's Illustrious Saviour has been long celebrated. Pleasure glowed in every countenance; and the voice of exulting joy rang through the nation. How affecting the change!
