The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) has, historically, been the focal point within the Army for topographic surveying and mapping. The U.S. Army Engineer Topographic Laboratories (US'ETL), a USACE research and development laboratory, has spearheaded research and development in the mapping sciences, developing automated mapping and surveying systems and supporting development of tactical system that process digital topographic data (DTD).
