The highly anticipated U.S. Supreme Court decision in Fisher v. University of Texas placed a greater onus on higher education institutions to provide evidence supporting the need for affirmative action policies on their respective campuses. It is now more critical than ever that institutional leaders and scholars understand the evidence in support of race consideration in admissions as well as the challenges of the post-Fisher landscape. This important volume shares information documented for the Fisher case and provides empirical evidence to help inform scholarly conversation and institutions’ decisions regarding race-conscious practices in higher education. With contributions from scholars and experts involved in the Fisher case, this edited volume documents and shares lessons learned from the collaborative efforts of the social science, educational, and legal communities. Affirmative Action and Racial Equity is a critical resource for higher education scholars and administrators to understand the nuances of the affirmative action legal debate and to identify the challenges and potential strategies toward racial equity and inclusion moving forward.

"Knowledge for Justice: An Ethnic Studies Reader is a joint publication of UCLA's four ethnic studies research centers (American Indian Studies, Asian American Studies, Chicana/o Studies, and African American Studies) and their administrative organization, the Institute of American Cultures. This book is premised on the assumption articulated by Johnnella Butler that ethnic studies is an essential and valuable course of study and follows an intersectional approach in organizing the articles. The book is divided into five sections-Legacies at Fifty, Formations and Ways of Being, Gender and Sexuality, Arts and Cultural Production, and Social Movements, Justice, and Politics-with each center contributing one or more articles or book chapters to each. In focusing on the intersectional intellectual, social, and political struggles that confront all of the groups represented in this anthology, the selections nonetheless articulate the specificity of each racial ethnic group's struggle, while simultaneously interrogating the ways in which such labels or categories are inadequate. The editors selected articles that not only address intersectional issues confronting various ethnic constituencies, but that also complicate the categories of representation undergirding such a project itself"--

Students, beginning and seasoned mental health professionals will be better prepared for diversity practice by this accessible, timely, provocative, and critical work, The Convergence of Race, Ethnicity and Gender: Multiple Identities in Counseling, Fifth Edition. Author Tracy Robinson-Wood demonstrates, through both the time honored tradition of storytelling and clinically-focused case studies, the process of patient and therapist transformation. This insightful, practical resource offers behavioral health professionals a nuanced view of diversity beyond race, culture, and ethnicity to include and interrogate intersectionality among race, culture, gender, sexuality, age, class, nationality, religion, and disability. With a keen focus on quality patient care, this important text aims to help professionals better serve patients across sources of diversity. Readers will recognize their roles and responsibilities as social justice agents of change, while identifying the ways in which dominant cultural beliefs and values furnish and perpetuate clients’ feelings of stuckness and inadequacy, in both the therapeutic alliance and within the larger society. This remarkable text reveres the lifelong commitment of using knowledge and skills as power for good to make a meaningful difference in people's lives.

Social science research has frequently found conflict between Latinos and African Americans in urban politics and governance, as well as in the groups' attitudes toward one another. Rodney E. Hero and Robert R. Preuhs analyze whether conflict between these two groups is also found in national politics. Based on extensive evidence on the activities of minority advocacy group in national politics and the behavior of minority members of Congress, the authors find the relationship between the groups is characterized mainly by non-conflict and a considerable degree of independence. The question of why there appears to be little minority intergroup conflict at the national level of government is also addressed. This is the first systematic study of Black-Latino intergroup relations at the national level of United States politics.
