Excerpt from The Essentials of Chemical Physiology for the Use of Students Chemical Physiology is a branch of physiological science which deals with the chemical composition of the body and the part played by the various substances found there in carrying out the phenomena of life. It thus differs from Physiological Chemistry, which is a branch of organic chemistry, and treats of the chemical composition and reactions of physiological substances. These two subjects are Closely interwoven, and this book really deals with both, although special prominence will be given to their physiological aspect. The substances found in the body are numerous, and in most cases complex; the majority of the foods from which the body is built up are equally elaborate, for animals do not possess to such an extent as plants do the power of building up complex from simple materials. The elements found in the body are carbon, hydrogen, nitrogen, oxygen, sulphur, phosphorus, fluorine, Chlorine, iodine, Silicon, sodium, potassium, calcium, magnesium, lithium, iron, and occasionally manganese, copper, and lead. Of these very few occur in the free state. Oxygen and nitrogen (to a small extent) are found dissolved in the blood-plasma; hydrogen is formed by putrefaction in the alimentary canal. With some few exceptions such as these, the elements enumerated above are found combined with one another to form compounds. Excerpt from Text-Book of Physiological Chemistry in Thirty Lectures Physiology and physiological chemistry were at one time a single field of investigation. The latter, owing to the remarkable progress of the exact sciences chemistry and physics, has now developed to such an impor tant branch of natural science that it is altogether impossible today for any one scientist to master thoroughly in all its details the whole field of physiology. Little by little, there has developed a sharp distinction between pure physiology and physiological chemistry. It is clear that an artificial separation of two such closely related fields of investiga tion must work to disadvantage for the development of each, so that it is fortunate to find it recognized more and more that the whole science of physiology can only develop satisfactorily when there is an intimate exchange of ideas between investigators in the two fields. The chemical decompositions in the tissues do not take place beside the physiological processes, but are bound up with them. In no single case can we carry out any distinction-in such a sense; and with those organs in which the relations between the functions and the metabolism are not known, this is chiefly because of our limited knowledge concerning the latter. In this connection we need only recall the whole nervous system. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Practical Physiological Chemistry This book was originally compiled as a handbook for prae tical work in Physiological Chemistry at University College, London, since no single text or class book covered the complete course, or treated Physiological Chemistry as part of the subject of Organic Chemistry, or even as an in dependent subject. The present book must still be regarded mainly as a compilation. It represents an attempt to give to the worker a nearly complete statement of the whole subject. Each section has a short explanatory summary of the essential points, so as to connect the various sections together. The essential points are illustrated by the practical experiments, which are printed in different type. The illustrations are also compiled from various sources. These are mentioned underneath each figure. The illustra tions of apparatus not so mentioned have been drawn from my own sketches. For those of the osazone crystals, haemin, and tyrosine, I am indebted to Miss V. G. Sheffield, who has also kindly helped in reading the proof sheets. Excerpt from A d104-Book of Physiological Chemistry, for Students of Medicine In the following pages I have attempted to present a brief account of the important principles of physiological chemistry in a form suitable for the use of medical students who may be assumed to have completed courses in the elements of general inorganic and organic chemistry. From the very necessities of the case a work of this character, dealing with many topics in an elementary way, must be largely a compilation; in the selection of material, besides consulting the standard hand books, I have made free use of the recent monographs by Cohnheim. Effront and Oppenheimer, as well as of numerous articles in the Zeitschrift fur physiologische Chemie, the Beitrage zur chemischen Physiologie und Pathologie and other journals. As the book is intended for beginners I have not thought it necessary to make any special quotations of literature references. In addition to the usual topics of discussion in elementary works on physiological chemistry I have given an outline of the chemical phases of the recent theories of immunity, and a short explanation of the important applications of the methods of cryoscopy and electrical conductivity, and other physical processes, in the field of chemistry related to medicine. Work in these latter lines must soon become a part of the laboratory training of medical students. A considerable number of illustrative experiments are given in the text, but distinguished by being printed in smaller type. These experiments are sufficiently numerous and comprehensive to serve the purpose of a laboratory course parallel with the general course. In the work of proofreading I have received very material assistance from my colleague, Dr. W. H. Buhlig, to whom my sincere thanks are due. Excerpt from A Text-Book of Physiological Chemistry IT follows from the law of the conservation of matter and of energy that living beings, plants and animals, can produce neither new matter nor new energy. They are only called upon to appropriate and assimilate already existing material and to transform it into new forms of energy.
