Excerpt from Essentials of Business English In the preparation of this text, the authors have made no attempt at originality, except as to the manner of pre senting the subject. They have kept uppermost in mind the object to be attained - the ability on the part of the student to use correct English. With this end in view, the material has been selected from various sources, and so modified and arranged as to produce this result with the least expenditure of time on the part of the student, and a minimum of work on the part of the teacher. No attempt has been made to produce an exhaustive treatise for the few, but rather a book of essentials for the many; nor has any effort been made to speculate upon the technical phases of the subject. The student's need is not theory and comment, but rather the rules and principles, with their proper application. I t is utterly useless to learn rules unless one learns to apply them. Excerpt from The Essentials of Business Law This book has not been written for lawyers, nor for professional students of the law, but for boys and girls in our secondary schools. Its purpose is to show how the rules of law, governing ordinary business transactions, have been developed, and to tell what they are. Technical law terms have been discarded as far as possible. When they have been used, care has been taken to explain and illustrate their meaning, so as to render them easily intel ligible to every attentive student. The author believes that the average high-school boy or girl can acquire an accurate knowledge of the essential principles of business law if these are set forth in clear, lucid, popular language. He has endeavored so to present them in the following pages. He has no idea that a mas tery of this book will fit the student for a bar' examination, or will enable him to be his own lawyer. He has the con viction, however, that it will give the student a fair ao quaintance with those legal principles and ideas which are involved in ordinary business affairs, and that it will help him to know when he ought to consult a lawyer, in order to avoid business pitfalls. Excerpt from The Essentials of Business English My dear Student: In order to make sure of your reading this preface I am putting it into the form of a personal letter. You should never fail to read the title-page and the preface of your book. You will sometimes find explanations and points of view there that will light up the whole book for you. In this preface I want to give you some simple practical directions for doing the work the book calls for; to tell you what you need not expect to get out of it; and to suggest to you how to get out of it the utmost help it has for you. 1. I want you to do all the work. Some of it may seem simple and familiar. But such parts are stepping-stones and are necessary. You have noticed that when the team first runs out on the foot-ball field, they toss the ball and run about like children. They are "limbering up"; and the process is necessary. So I want you to take the easy sentences and exercises as limbering-up movements. If you do you will scarcely notice that they slowly grow more complex. Do everything you are asked to do, and do it as well as possible. 2. You can see that I have written it air as simply as it could be written, using as few technical terms as possible. But I beg you not to be frightened at the names of things in grammar and the other branches of language study. Excerpt from Business English This work grew out of teaching English to college men who were beginning their studies in Engineering. It seemed for various reasons desirable to give such students - along with their work in pure literature and technical English - some in struction in English as adapted to buying and selling, advertis ing and correspondence. There seemed however to be no text-book quite available for such a purpose. A purely elementary text-book, ignoring all high-school English and some of the grammar-school instruo tion, would not do. Nor could the need be supplied by some more advanced book devoted to the principles of correspond ence. What was needed was a book which took into considera tion the best standards and scholarship of college teaching, and applied the established principles of composition to the special problems of business, with due reference to the vocabularies of commerce and commercial law. From this point of view, then, the text of the book was writ ten. When finished, much of it was seen to be Within the grasp of younger students. It was then determined to simplify the text a little further, and to construct exercises which would make the book serviceable in the third and fourth year of tech nical and commercial high schools, in the first year of technical colleges, in business colleges, and in correspondence work. The manner in which this adjustment has been made may be seen at a glance in the exercises under Argument (p. Excerpt from Business English Its Principles and Practice Part I also presents the important elements of good English. Grammar and punctuation are treated not as a system of rules, but as a structural part of composi tion. This method has been adopted not only because the business man is not interested in grammar and punctuation except as they are applied, but also because experience has shown that students obtain a better working mastery of good sentence structure and diction when it is taught In this way. The experienced teacher knows that a knowledge of rules and the ability to write clearly are often far apart in actual practice. No essen tial principle of syntax or punctuation has been omitted.
